I''ve been lurking for a while now and will probably be shopping more hardcore in the next few months. I can''t believe the knowledge I''ve picked up in the few months, thanks to all of you. ;)

BF gave me a $15 K limit on the diamond, and I''m looking for ~2 ct stone that will shine. I''m thinking not lower than I, not lower than vs2. With the discussions that I have seen about EGL vs. GIA and others, I''m thinking for an EGL it should be H/vs1.

I found this EGL isreal certified diamond:

Cut ROUND BRILLIANT
Carat 2.14
Color H
Clarity VS1
Price $ 12723.16
Price per Carat $ 5945.40
Measurements 8.31 x 8.37 x 5.04 mm
Depth Percentage 60.4 %
Table Percentage 56 %
Crown Angle
Pavilion Percentage %
Pavilion Angle
Girdle STK-TK
Culet N
Polish EXCELLENT
Symmetry EXCELLENT
Fluorescence NONE
Certificate Notes
Other Notes H&A
Clarity-Enhanced NO

I know that the girdle is thick, how will that affect performance? Also, I know Hearts and Arrows are an indicator of symmetry - are they also a good general indicator of cut? I guess I woud need to get the crown and pavilion angles to run it through the HCA.

I''m not looking to buy just yet, so it probably won''t be this particular diamond. Just want to see what sorts of pitfalls a diamond like this might have.

Thanks in advance!

Stick to GIA or AGS labs. EGL (particularly Israel) is not worth trusting. Many consider it to be 1-2 grades worse in clarity and color. Why think "well, i will pretend it is an I or J and SI1 or Si2 instead of H VS2....." Just go for the GIA I si2 and at least you will get what you think you are getting rather than chancing it and price per carat will probably be the same anyways for egl israel h vs2 and GIA j si2....but you can ensure the cut is what it is and at least get a good performer

I totally disagree with all those here than automatically discount EGL diamonds. In fact, GOG sells them. As long as you do your research, talk to the vendors, and/or have an appraiser with all the tools give you an opinion, it could be worth considering.

I really get annoyed by all those that just say buy GIA or AGS. True, you get better assurance, but you may get some bargains with EGL.

Absolutely Horatio, it should be all about the diamond, and not about the picture

This stone will likely be rather shallow in crown and pavilion angles because the woofers that graded it apply different rules for girdle.

Ask the vendor for a Sarin 3D scan, ideal-scope photo (http://www.ideal-scope.com/newsletters_issue008.asp will tell them how to do it very easily with a mobile phone camer even) or simple Sarin report. all will help.

Just having H&A''s written on the report does not mean the stone would be even close to what people here call H&A''s.
And H&A''s as you say - is about sym, not about proportions.

Thanks everybody. If I limit myself to non-EGL diamonds, I guess I''m looking at an I/Si ring or getting a smaller diamond. What would you do with a 15K budget (one round stone)?

I''d personally look around the 1.7-1.8 range (GIA/AGS) and try to get a little better color and clarity. I am seeing 2 ct. I SI2''s go above $15,000.

The only way I''d consider EGL is if one of these vendors has hand selected some, such as Good Old Gold does have a couple (smaller than what you''re looking for).
