So I am looking for that one lovely little rock that all girls go gaga over. Here is the one that the jeweler was able to get.

EGL Cert
Cut: Ascher
Weight: .70ct
Colour: F
Clarity VVS2
Measurements: 4.97x4.92x3.46
Total Depth: 70.3%
Table Width: 72%
Crown Height: 11%
Pavilion depth: 52%
Girdle Thickness: Slightly Thick, Polished
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Cullet: None
Graining: Nil
Flourescence: None
Cost: $2850

Under the microsope, it looked just stunning. Even my mother was impressed with it (yes, I brought her along for advice).

So, for those who know diamonds, how does this one look?

Welcome to PS

You need Storm to check this out for you as he is our resident Asscher expert, it is an EGL cert which is said at times to be softer on grading than GIA or AGS, is it an EGL USA cert or Israel, Antwerp or Europe etc? This too can make a difference as EGL USA is said to be the most accurate of the EGL labs.

strike one egl cert
strike 2 table is too big
strike 3 a little too deep

its out

If everything else was perfect the depth would be ok with a discount but in this case its the 3rd strike.

I''m pretty forgiving of numbers when your eyes like a stone, but in this case, I''d have to agree that that table is so large that the effect of the asscher''s depth will be completely different than in a better cut stone. More open and emerald-cut like, rather than the look of unending depth (the mile deep look everyone talks about) which is what people really look for in an asscher.

I''ll bet the stone looks lovely, but if you could put it next to a really well cut one you would see that there is a big difference in the way the stone draws you in.

Yet there are people who like that open table look....they can be beautiful too!

What is the ideal table for an Ascher? Do you have photos comparing an ideal cut with one with a table that is too large?

Thanks!

I am so not the expert, but I'll link a pic from an ebay auction that I'll guess has a large table, not great cut, looks kind of still and dead.

Then go click on any stone on good old gold's in house asschers and you'll see how your eye gets drawn in until you feel like you will be lost forever.... But this is best accomplished in person of course

Ebay Asscher Stink Bomb

or....link to GOG above in Storm's reply.

ETA: GOG for the good example of course! And there are several PS posts that list good asscher guidelines if you search. I personally like tables under the low 60%, like 55-62% roughly. But it is a taste matter, not a right or wrong matter!

check out this thread...
I really need to do a new faq on em.
ignore the part about over 15% crown height some of the best ones are coming in the 16-17% range right now.
The over 10% still applies.
depths over 70% I liike to see a discount on them.

Sounds like I got a pretty bad cut on this one. Dang... I wish I found this place sooner because my time window is very very tight and I dont think I can find anything else and get it done on time.

Thanks for the info!

Do you think I should go back to them and try to haggle out a discount?

How flexible are you on your budget? Have you see this one from GOG? If you have more time I am sure you could find other ones with better cuts than the one you are considering. Good luck!
