hey everyone, first of all i''m new here and want to say thanks for all the good info on this site =D

it is about time for me to really start looking at diamonds for my gf, and have essentially narrowed things down like this:

i''m giving myself a budget of around $6000 for the diamond. I want to get 1ct, and ideal cut (or close to it). the other stuff i can sacrifice on, but don''t want to go lower than H or VS2. These two diamonds stood out to me and i was wondering what your opinions were on them...

whiteflash

bluenile

i probably am not going to buy either of these exact stones since i won''t be ready to buy for at least a few weeks, so i''m mostly using your feedback as a guideline to use when it comes time. if you have some other suggestions, please throw em at me!!!

TIA

Hi f2b,

The WF stone is perfect, nothing wrong there at all.

The BN stone is pretty good too, the only thing I notice is that the table is slightly larger than what most of us look for. It''s not bad, but at that size, you will lose a bit of fire, and the stone will in turn give off more white light. Some people love this look, it''s not a bad thing, just different.

If you want to get a nice mix of fire and white light, try and stay in the 54-57, maybe to 58 range.

Other than that, you seem to be on the right track!

thanks for the encouragement ellen =)

interesting, i guess i''ve missed a few things in research (table size). thanks for pointing that out!!!

so, if the BN diamond had a table size equal to the WF one, would you consider them pretty much equal?

my other concern was the thin-medium facet on the WF diamond. from what i''ve read, i should be looking to get med-slightly thick? in your opinions, are the thin-medium facets sufficient?

thanks again!!!

I would personally recommend to get their signature ideal stones if you choose one from BN. Although BN does not provide as much information as desired, their SI stones are nice H&A. Many come with AGS and some with GIA, along with extra CGL report. Their SIs are nice and you have 30 days to inspect the stone yourself or with an independent appraiser.

If you plan to upgrade the stnoe in the future ... stick with WF - my 2 cents.

Regarding the girdle, ideal can be thin, medium, or slightly thick. The color is better on the WF stone in addition to the cut being ideal. Stick with ideal cut just to be safe. WF has a trade-up policy and BN does not, so if you ever wanted to upgrade color, size, etc., you could at WF. So between these two, it is not a hard decision.

The other measurements that are important are crown and pavilion angle, and that is very important if you are considering buying from a vendor that does not give you idealscope photos, etc.

Well, maybe. The thing is, GIA rounds their numbers, so we don't know what they truly are (and BN won't tell you). Also, they lack IS pics, so it's not really comparing apples with apples. Those are pretty "safe" numbers though. In searching for GIA stones, John Q made a kind of "cheat sheet" for crown/pavillion angles that will help. I would suggest, if you decide on a GIA BN stone, take it to an independent appraiser to make sure it checks out (since they don't give as much info).

As far as girdles, thin-med.-slightly thick, faceted or not, are all fine.

And you're very welcome!

very good to know!! i''ve heard good things about both co''s but will definitely take that into consideration.

i''ve been speaking with someone at WF and they''ve been extremely helpful so far, so i''m kinda leaning towards them anyways

the SI''s are a bit out of my budget, though i bet they are impressive. at least they sound it

o wow thanks everyone for the input, it''s really helpful

i was not aware of the trade-up policy at WF, that really does put them higher on my list (and they also give more info

)

so do you all agree that the WF diamond is a pretty nice stone?

i''m really considering this one now

Yes, it is a nice stone. It is highly likely that this one is better than the other BN/Ideal you posted. Get this one, and you will be happy.
