Opinions on sidestones for 5 stone asscher ring

Hello all! I have asked David Klass to make my setting, and he has sent me pictures of some possible sidestones for my 6.1 x 6.1 asscher (shown here with a 6mm princess stand-in). I think the proportions are spot-on, but I wonder if the sidestones need to be smaller so that my center stone doesn't get swallowed up and all 5 stones look like one diamond blob from far away? I worry that the center stone isn't big enough to stand out with these particular sized sidestones. On the other hand, I do want to have the sidestones lower and angled more steeply than more traditional 5 stones so I wonder if that would be enough to make the center stone pop.

Your thoughts would be appreciated, thank you!

Don't forget that your asscher has cut corners.

Right, so the sidestones would look even bigger next to it, is that what you meant?

I also prefer the side stones to be angled. Does he not have your diamond yet? I think he needs to have your diamond in these pictures because a princess cut is just not the same. How big your cut corners are is going to be a factor. I'd wait until you send your diamond before deciding.

Yes, I was actually wondering why he wasn't requiring me to send my diamond first! You're absolutely right, and I'll be sending it in right away. If I recall correctly, Registered Mail is the safest way to send it?

Hi all!

So David now has my stone and has sent me pictures with possible sidestone combinations. Would love to hear your thoughts!

1) .37 traps, .30 tapered bags

2) .37 traps, .12 tapered bags

3) .30 'fancy' cut

The five stone look is what I've always wanted, as I love the look of the taper. I think I like #2 the best, although I would like the traps to be shorter, and I would like bullets instead of the bags.

I'll admit the fancy did tickle my fancy for a minute, although in a smaller size. But I don't know if I would tire of that, I think it'd probably be better going with the classic 5 stone.

I should mention that my asscher is 6.1 x 6.1 and while I love the 5 stone look, I definitely don't want the center stone to be overwhelmed, and I don't want it to look smaller. I also don't want it to look like one giant blob from far away. I was thinking that if we scaled down the sidestones so it would have a similar proportion to a 5 stone with a bigger center stone, I could still have the center stone be the star with the beautiful tapered look. But if the center stone is too small to achieve this, I'm still open to doing a solitaire with a thin band so I can maximize the size. I'm a ring size 4.5. Thank you!

And here's what my asscher looks like in a solitaire! Thank you! :wavey:

I like #2 with the smaller baguettes.Honestly it looks PERFECT to me. Lots of bling but the center stone is the star.

I don't like the cadillacs in number 3 with it. And I feel that #1 detracts too much from the center.

Thanks for your thoughts Gypsy! I do feel the proportions of #2 are pretty great. I was looking at EricaD's amaaaazing (former) 5 stone Leon, and I think her traps taper down more, and her bullets are smaller. Might that look better, especially because my stone is so much smaller?

Also which picture are you thinking of when you say #4? Definitely don't want anything detracting from the center!

The 3rd photo, number 2? That's my favorite.

Thanks Niel! What do you think about the Leon 5 stone picture I posted, do you think it would look better for my stone if the traps tapered more and the end bullets were smaller?

This is the one I meant. Third Photo, number two. Smaller Baguettes.

Especially if you are going for that Leon look. And David will have to angle those traps quite a bit to get the right look for you.

Do you think I need different traps or enough angling will make them look more tapered?

Thank you again for your help!

Hard to say. Can David get you slightly smaller traps?

I've waiting to hear back on that, it seems traps are not that easy to come by? I guess especially in so small a size.

I'm feeling excited that I've nailed down exactly the look I'd like though!

Ditto on this. I am no expert. But this combination looks the most fluid and elegant.

This third photo number two is what I am thinking of doing with a zircon or yellow sapphire - both of which I just bought.

I also really like that he gave you options with actual stones so you could see it. That helps a lot.

Thank you, it seems we have a consensus which is great! Exciting news about your project as well!

I can't wait to see this project finished, it is going to be stunning!

Smaller .20 traps! I don't know if I feel they need to be smaller..

Thanks Niel, to my eye they don't seem that much smaller though?

Also, I wonder if these tapered bags are narrow enough at the end that I wouldn't need bullets?

I like the 20 pointer traps. But it's your ring not mine. I do not think you need bullets.

I like the 20 pointer traps too. Just wondering whether I need to go smaller.

My vote is for the most recent set of side stones.

I absolutely love the proportions of Erica's old ring, and I would go with the most recent set or smaller. I thought the other traps were too big for your stone and would blend right in with the center stone. I like it when the side stones are an accent rather than an extension of the center stone. I think the baguettes in the last set look good.

What size is your ring finger? Because I think Erica's stones are larger and the stones curve nicely around the top of her finger.

Thank you ds! I totally agree with you, and wonder if going smaller would help the proportions look like Erica's old ring or whether going smaller would make it look like the sidestones are part of the band as opposed to a 5 stone?

I'm a 4.5 and my stone is way smaller (1.5 vs. 3+ I believe), but I actually don't want the sides to add to the width of my finger to maximize the size of the center stone.

Oh yes, I like the proportions of Erica's as they are. I wasn't suggesting making your stones larger as I like the smaller sides. It's just that if you told me you wore a size 7 or something, I would tell you that your stones would not curve around the finger like hers and would not have the same finger coverage which would give you a very different look. BUT, now that I know you wear 4.5, you will be fine with your size stones! I think the last set may be about right.
