I am looking at purchasing a used ring. I figure it may be a good buy. However I am concerned about 3 things. One it is EGL stone, and there is something expressed that seems funny.....This is at pearlmans and it states
"The ring is set with a center diamond EGL certified VS2 H 1.01ct center. Stone grades true but will down grade for pricing purposes. "

What does that mean ??

Concern 2 - I would want this to be white gold, can it simply be plated white??

Concern 3 - Is it wrong to give a "used" ring for an engagment ?

I would appreciate any input. Also, is it a decent deal ? Thanks

Welcome to Pricescope.

I don't know about that stone, maybe if you got more info off the certificate on it that would help. Can they give you more info?

They could replate that ring in white gold. That style of ring may not be your girlfriends style. Has she seen it? I thought I would throw this out there for you say you said you would appreciate any suggetions.

I found a lovely diamond in your price range using this search tool https://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx and you could set in a whitegold setting. I bought my stone from WF and they have a lifetime trade up policy if you ever want to trade up. You can search yourself w/your criteria but remember the excellent cut is going to sparkle the most. http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-471579.htm

In terms of buying used rings, all kinds of people buy antique/heirloom/estate rings. Some people love it, some don''t. I would have loved to have bought an old early 1900''s estate engagement ring but my girlfriend felt used rings of any kind were bad luck. you can also get great used rings which are newer pieces at Signed Pieces.

Point is, there''s no right or wrong. It''s a matter of personal preference. If your partner is fine with the idea, go for it. But, I''d personally feel her out about it before making a purchase.

65% is big for a table. Personally, I''d send it to an appraiser before purchase, given the table size and EGL cert. But, that''s just me.

Well first of all, the style of that setting is very dated. It''s a style very typical of the 80s-super wide and diamondy. (No offense to anyone who enjoys that style, but that''s my opinion!) Yellow gold can be rhodium plated to give it a white gold appearance.

As for the EGL cert and comment, EGL is known for being soft on grading-therefore, an H/VS2 could actually be more like a GIA or AGS J/SI1. If they say it''s graded true, it probably is, because Pearlman''s is a very reputable and respected jeweler. However, because it is an EGL certed stone, it will be less expensive than a GIA certed stone no matter what.

As for the cut, it has a 65% table, which is outside of ideal cut parameters. An ideal diamond would have a table between 53% and 58% according to the AGA cut grades, so that''s pretty far off, obviously.

I personally did not like the idea of a used ring for myself, but some people wouldn''t mind.

I think you should probably do more research on cut and pass on this one. You want a white gold setting and this is yellow gold, and the diamond isn''t that well cut. If you do a search using the Pricescope diamond search, you can find several 1 carat I and J color diamonds with better proportions that start at $3281, so I don''t think the price is that great, either.

I have to agree with thing2...It''s really really a dated look and unless your lady LOVES that look, I''d steer more towards timeless settings.
