Hi All,

I will be making my first diamond engagement ring purchase very soon. I''ve been education myself by researching online and have a fair amount of knowledge up to this point. I''ve looked at some online retailers to get an idea of prices and what I can afford on my budget. For the first time today I set foot in a local independent jewelry store to look at some stones up close and personal and see what they had to offer with in my budget and desired characteristics.

I saw a diamond that REALLY caught my eye and the price seemed to be inline with what I expected based on my online research. I was hoping to get some second, third, etc. opinions.

Round diamond
Hearts and Arrows Cut
0.77 carat weight
F color
SI1
$4,375 (w/out setting)

Does this sound like a resonable price to everyone else?

I went into the store with a $4,000 - $5,000 budget in mind. I knew I wanted round, somewhere between .75 and .99 carat, as close to ideal cut as possible, between D and I color, and VS2 to SI1 clarity.

Thoughts?

Horescore,

Hard to say.

First up, though...make your decision closer to apples to apples comparison. The qualities you mention so far are attractive, but add a) which specific certificate comes with it, if any, and b) the data for things like crown & pavilion angle measures marked on the certificate.

Even then...since you know you''re shopping locally, you know you''re likely to pay a premium for your goods. But...consider this option IS available, too...comes with AGS0 certification, and is a branded option. The disparity in the best of cases here is not inconsiderable...and we don''t'' know that what you''ve seen, despite it being attractive, represents the best of cases.

We''re a tough crowd.

Hi,

Regular Guy showed you one great Whiteflash stone. Their website currently has four similarly-sized F SI1s that are about $1000 less than what the local shop quoted you. Here are the stones:

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-283268.htm

As you can see, the jeweler you were working with, IMO, is not asking a reasonable price. Most likely you will save a lot of money by buying online and you'll be able to get a larger VERY WELL cut diamond as well.
