I was obsessively shopping for a "perfect" diamond and ended up deciding on the following:

Fixed link

I was filtering out for colors I and above, however now I hear that you need at least an H for "colorless".

My criteria was as follows:

1. At least 1ct
2. At least "ideal cut"
3. At least I color
4. At least SI1 with no inclusions on the "table"

I finally found one that met all of those criteria and came up with the above diamond.

As for the setting, I chose Fixed link

Now for my question, will the "medium blue" fluorescence be enough to make an I color diamond appear colorless?

I found this forum after I ordered it, however I can probably cancel it if I want to. Thanks for helping.

Sorry, the link doesn't work for me, it is coming up with a 13 carat D IF diamond for well over a million, or $5k....!!! I don't know if they have whipped the details of your diamond off the site now you bought it....

But regarding the I colour and fluorescence, many believe that it could help the diamond face up whiter, and it will look very white if the cut is good, but it won't look colourless compared to a reliably graded D or E, that is why it has been graded an I, however an I can be an excellent choice for most people. Out of interest an I colour is where the industry believe that the average person may begin to notice a hint of tint to the diamond, but this depends on various factors and the individual colour perception of the viewer.

Are you sure it doesnt work? I just tried and did a refresh and it still comes up, however it says "diamond is not available for sale"

Please try this link

Still doesn''t work....I forgot to say welcome by the way in my first post!! I seem to remember this has happened before in other threads that this diamond has popped up for some reason....

an I color diamond will appear colorless from the top when well-cut. My diamond is an I and it''s an EC, and it still faces up completely white. It may, however, show a little color from the side or bottom. And that usually isn''t a problem anyway.

And I have heard that flourescence can make a low-color diamond look whiter in some lights. I don''t believe it''s necessary, though. IMO.

Sorry Ash, the second link for the setting works, but the diamond one still no....

Thanks for the warm welcome! I''m working on saving the page right now and perhaps posting a doc along w/ the GIA report, etc.

The links are working fine for me.

The I color would be just fine; G/H/I/J are all labeled as "near colorless". Most of those face up colorless, and any body color would likely be seen if you're looking at the stone from a side-view (profile).

The cut, though, isn't what I'd term 'ideal'. It falls within GIA excellent parameters, but it falls outside AGS0 parameters (which are stricter). I'd consider that a 'premium' cut, but not an 'ideal' cut.

I'd personally prefer to stick closer to AGS0 cut proportions if the goal is an 'ideal' cut stone. Here are several stones in your budget range that would fit the bill.

ETA: Sorry last link doesn't seem to be working; James Allen appears to be having a problem with website this morning???

Thanks for the reply. If you still can''t see the link, here''s the info:

Price: $5,361

Carat weight: 1.06

Cut: Ideal

Color: I

Clarity: VS1

Depth %: 59.5%

Table %: 59%

Symmetry: Excellent

Polish: Excellent

Girdle: Thin to medium, faceted

Culet: None

Fluorescence: Medium blue

Measurements: 6.67 x 6.71 x 3.98 mm

aljdewey: May I ask why it does not meet AGSL''s "ideal cut" requirements?

Proportions put it outside AGS0 ideal range.

Likely contributors: crown/pavilion angle relationship as well as larger table.

Thanks. It looks like the table is too large at 59% for AGS0. I''m not sure if anything else is out of range.

Thanks to the very helpful advice on this forum, I called Blue Nile and replaced the stone with the following:

Stone

With your help, I was able to determine that my initial choice was not a true ideal cut. I'm also pleased that my new choice is also a bit cheaper, as well as rating better on the HCA (1.3 vs 2.8), all with similar attributes:

I color, medium blue fluorescence, VS1

According to the AGSL cert, "AGSL #NNNNNNN H&A has been inscribed on the girdle of this diamond". I have not seen this on any other AGSL cert, does this mean that this stone is a "true H&A" diamond?

Any idea why the stone is cheaper even though it''s clearly a better cut?

Numbers on this one look much better.

The note about inscription is simply AGS reporting what is inscribed on the girdle.

Since AGS doesn''t grade or certify and assess quality of H&A, their notation doesn''t mean it''s true H&A. It just means "hey, please know that the girdle has the following inscriptions on it."

No idea why it''s less expensive, but looks to be a spectacular choice. Have it checked by an independent appraiser when it arrives and you''re good to go.

Thank you very much for your reassurance. I've contacted a couple of local appraisers already and I will have it checked out when it arrives next week.

I'd also like to add that Blue Nile's customer service is excellent. I called very late last night around 11:30EST and they were able to cancel my previous order and replace it with the new one with no issues at all. The person was very helpful and professional.

Thanks again all!

Hi all. I just wanted to do an update. I received the ring and it''s absolutely beautiful! I''ll post pics as soon as my "soon to be" fiancee slips it on. Unfortunately, that may be a few more weeks. We were looking around for rings not long ago and I would like to surprise her somehow.

Hi all, she said yes! Here''s a pic of the ring. Thanks again for helping me pick the right diamond!

Congrats, it''s beautiful!

Thanks Kelly, Dee and Ellen! She is definitely thrilled and really loves the ring! Yes Ellen, I was very anxious to give it to her because I wanted for her to enjoy it as much as I did when I was looking at it in the box.

I was planning on asking her on New Year''s Eve, but I couldn''t wait that long! So I asked her on our 11 year and 5 month anniversary. We''ve both waited long enough!

I set up the computer so a screensaver would pop up saying "Look underneath the keyboard for a surprise!". I also set it up to play an MP3 of "Only One" by Yellowcard. It looked like a regular anniversary card with the exception of my proposal in the end. At the moment she read my proposal, I surprised her with the ring, and a few tears later, we were engaged!

We were able to visit the Jewelry Judge in Garden City, NY today and got the ring appraised. Barry Block was very professional and very thorough. He was able to verify the inscription on the girdle (AGSL# and H&A) and was very close to all the measurements/grading of the diamond.

His appraisal (10,800) was very close to Blue Nile's appraisal of 10,950, however he was very surprised at what I actually paid for it. $4,974 for the stone and 10% off the $1,700 setting, $6,504 total. He thought it would be typical of Blue Nile to charge $9,000 for it!

All I can say is that I would not have been able to pull this off without Pricescope and it's members' help. You guys are the best!
