Opinion on this diamond I am considering:

GIA certificate

1.39 ct
Color: G
Clarity: SI-1
Cut: Excellent
Total depth: 60.7%
Table: 56%
crown angle: 32.5 degrees
crown height: 14%
pavilion angle: 41.2 degrees
pavilion depth: 43.5%
very small culet
polish: vg
symmetry: vg
no fluorescence
7.25-7.29 x 4.41 mm

Asking price is $8600.00

Have you seen it? The numbers are fine, although the price is a tad high, IMO, considering the VG finish marks and the shallower crown/deeper pavilion combination compared to a Tolkowsky. It is a rare carat weight. B&M markup?

The rare size-point is probably bringing a markup. Numbers are fine, but, as Julie pointed out, pricing seems a bit steep on this one. Pickings are really slim at this size, but a quick search suggests you can find better cuts in the G-H, VVS-VS range weighing 1.25ct or so at a lower price.

It is being offered at a B&M.

Pricing is indeed in line with B&M. Do you have a particular reason for choosing buying locally over the internet? Is the extra expense worth it for you?

I am not against buying my stone from an internet vendor. However, as you pointed out, a stone at this size is rare. It faces up close to some 1.5 carat stones and it is cut to look quite beautiful. I haven''t seen a peer on the internet yet--but I''m always looking.

what is the girdle rating?
With that crown angle it needs to be at least med or durability may be an issue.

Thin to slightly thick.

Thin to slightly thick.
needs an expert in person eval. to see if there is a durability issue in my opinion.

As to durability, if I purchase insurance, this shouldn''t be an issue. Correct?

I''ve only heard that very thin girdles are of concern, so I''m not clear on why Storm said anything to you re: durability.

shallow crown=less diamond

If you have a good return policy with the stone, you could take it to an independent appraiser to have evaluated before setting. They should be able to tell you whether there is a durability issue.

yep

Shallow crown=less diamond?

I would think that the shallower crown adds diameter to the stone. A deeper pavilion then balances the effect of the shallow crown allowing for a good deal of brilliance but less fire. Am I wrong?

With shallow crowns with small table there is less diamond over the girdle area therefore the girdle should be thicker to make up for it.

edit: yes it should be a very brilliant diamond and fire will be down a bit.
