Hello - I have been doing a lot of reasearch because i am getting serious about buying. Thankfully men have a site like this one to research.

I found this diamond on bluenile. I am curious if the experts think this diamond is as perfect as I think it is.

Welcome!

This diamond looks potentially very nice, the diameter measurement has a bit of variance and we are normally used to seeing this a bit tighter with many of the diamonds we see here, but all in all it looks like a nice make of diamond. BN as yet don''t provide Idealscope images which would be helpful, but it looks like a possibility on paper.

Lorelei,

Thanks for the feedback. That is exactly what I was looking for. Being new to this can you explain in more simpler terms for me?

"the diameter measurement has a bit of variance and we are normally used to seeing this a bit tighter with many of the diamonds we see here"

Glad to!! We normally see the cream of the crop superideal cut diamonds here which have for example - a diameter measurement of say 6.88 - 6.92 - to use similar measurements to your diamond. Yours measures 6.88- 7.02 which is a difference of around .14mm. Some experts have said that a difference in the diameter of more than .10mm can mean a diamond is out of round ( this isn''t often noticable to the naked eye). There can be certain advantages possibly into finishing a diamond like that such as weight retention etc. However the Superideals previously mentioned are a very rare breed of the best cut diamonds in the world, which are crafted and finished to exact proportions. Now, an expert here and I were discussing " out of round" diamonds recently and he seemed to think that in the real world, this isn''t a huge issue, doesn''t affect performance etc. So with all else being good with the diamond, it could be well worth consideration, although you could get one which is cut tighter in this area should you desire.

Yes, Lorelei...good catch.

Not sure how much this matters, your notice, but it may.

I was going to say it DID look perfect.

And, I was finding it odd, wanting to double check for you, to see if it could be perfecter.

If you use the search by cut db here, above under prices, you''ll see about 6 options, each saving you about 2 grand (oddly, usually BN is is "priced right,") like this one...and most of these do come with the additional sort of graphical images that help to nail possible irregularities for a diamond.

So...though you actually shopped very well...it''s at least possible you could do a bit better.

Regards,

Ok, now i am feeling ya!

So the first two measurements 6.88 x 7.02 x 4.20 should be as close to equal as possible? And is the last number always going to be around 4.20?

I looked at a diamond yesterday that the dealer was really pushing and to me under the lights it really was spectacular but I am now thinking I can do so much better especially since this diamond is well under my budget.

Sometimes you find the diamonds such as the A Cut Above which Ira linked, are very close with this measurement, but a good approach is to perhaps look for within about .8mm or closer, some might say .10mm.

With the diamond you noted above, we would need the crown and pavillion angles to really be able to tell.

This is great! Thanks again. I am starting to get it.

Should I be nervous if the store I am shopping at is more reluctant to give me the exact specs. I feel akward asking for every angle and he is not outwardly giving them to me. Being a person looking at diamonds for the first time in my life under excellent lighting any diamond will look good.

Basically todays diamond buyer is far more informed thanks to the wealth of knowledge now available, and dealers and vendors are more used to being asked to provide these measurements and info. However there are those who for whatever reason aren't comfortable, my opinion is that this is a very important purchase costing a lot of money, and the angles and proportions are a good way to evaluate each diamond. If your vendor won't provide this info or tries not to, then I would take my business to someone who would work with me to help me feel my money is being well spent, and have no problem in providing the information I want. As you say, under this type of lighting, any diamond will look good, so you want to try and make sure you find one which is well cut, so that it will perform well away from the jewellers.

Also take all the time you need to feel comfortable with your new venture, there are many lovely diamonds out there and you will find the right one!

I agree! Thanks for all the help everyone. I am going to spend more on perfect angles and a diamond that looks great. I now know the anlges I want and will start my search for the perfect diamond :)

You are most welcome! If you need any more help just shout, and I wish you the best of luck with your search! Please post pics if you find THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if you are familiar with this tool, but it can be very useful to judge how well a diamond is cut if you are going it alone with diamond dealers, B&M establishments etc.
