You might want to consider one of these, which all score well in the HCA and seem to be in your budget:

Hi hawk,

First, do you know which EGL lab graded this? That can make a difference on whether the stone is likely to match the grading report. It is possible that the stone could end up really being somewhere around an I-J, SI1-SI2. If you haven''t already, search for EGL and you''ll get an idea about the varying labs.

Now, are you looking for an Ideal cut stone, or just a nice make? Also, do you want a nice mix of fire and white light? This stone is geared towards more white light, less fire. Some people love that, others want a bit more balance.

Also, are you looking locally or online?

There, I think I''ve asked you enough questions for one post.

Not sure on the exact lab. The cert just says EGL. Looking for ideal if possible. I''m not sure what the difference is between white light and fire are. If you could explain that it would help a ton. I am planning on buying locally. Thanks for the help!

Hi Hawk,

I think white light is when the light basically bounces off the diamond. The light looks white. Imagine light just bouncing off a piece of glass (for an extreme example). My understanding is that the depth and table are the most important factors in determining how much of this goes on. Fire would be when light enters the stone, reflects a bunch of times inside the stone and breaks up into different colors, and then comes out. The light comes back colored and looks absolutely gorgeous, IMHO.

EGL grading is not very consistent, so an H VS2 might well be several grades off. If it''s from a trusted vendor who approves it, go ahead -- but if it''s not, be careful and make sure to take a look at it before you commit to the stone.

Good luck!

HI:

I used the PS database to do a price comparsion--using only the carat weight (1.27), color (H), clarity (VS2) and lab (EGL) like the variables you provided. I got a few hits, stones ranging in price from $4800-$5500.

cheers--Sharon

In a nutshell, white light means, when the diamond flashes, it will mainly be white sparkles. Fire is the different colored flashes. Try searching on here, there are many threads. Also, my Fire Thread is on page 2 here in RT, there are some great examples of fire flashes in there.

Depending on how a stones is cut, including things like depth, table size, crown and pavillion angles, you can get one or the other, or both. The latter is what most people prefer, but it''s all personal preference. If you want a nice mix of both, you''ll get that from an Ideal cut stone.

Since you are shopping locally, the absolute easist way to get a stone that will be pleasing, would be to look at AGS graded stones, with a zero for light performance. These take a lot of the guesswork out of diamonds, and allow you to buy more comfortably without having to do a crash couse in diamonds.

You will find these stones run more, but, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. It''s worth it.
