Hello -

Much like everyone else, I came across this sight trying to learn as much as a I can about diamonds. I've found two that I'm really interested in. One is from my local jewler, the other from Bluenile. There is a $2000 price difference between the two. I odered the one from blue nile to compare to the one my jewler has. I have not viewed them yet.

Any opinions on these two?

Jewler stone: 1.33 F VS1 GIA XXX 56% table, 61.3% depth, 35.0 crown angle, 40.8 pavillion. HCA says it's 1.5

Blue Nile: 1.40 F VS2 GIA XXX 55% table, 61.2% depth, 34.0 crown angle, 40.6 pavillion, HCA says .6

I'd love to take the on-line stone in to campare to the one the jeweler located for me, but I'm not sure if that will offend him or not. He's put some effort into locating that diamond for me. The downside is his is the more expnesive one.

Speedsport,

Forum rules prevent me from commenting on a diamond from a specific vendor but I can give you some general rules to help you which should make it easier.

If you can get ASET or Idealscope pictures of both diamonds for comparison of light performance, someone on this forum can give you an idea of which they prefer.

But the bottom line is this - you will have both diamonds to see, in person.

When you have diamonds, in hand, and can check them in a variety of lighting conditions, side-by-side... pick the one you like better.

Thanks for the reply. I wish I could figure out how to edit the name out of the post.

I had both in hand and studied both side by side for a while last night. I could not tell a difference at all. The jewler had a hard time as well, and had nothing bad to say about the one I brought in to compare with his. I would say that his was probably a slightly technically better from a symmetry standpoint as the arrows were ever so slightly more defined. But that was only visible when looking through a 10x loupe.

It makes it hard as I'd like to give the local guy the business, but even after any negotiating he is still $1400 more for the 1.33 then I paid for the 1.4. If sizes were equal I would buy from him without much thought...but I can't get over paying more for a smaller stone when the differences are not visible.

I totally understand wanting to support the local business but $1400 is a lot of $$. No one is going just give you $$. You work hard for that $$ so I feel if he wants your business I think he needs to at least meet at the price of the larger diamond. I think the smaller stone should be cheaper but being a brick and mortar store, he has more overhead expenses so meeting at the same price is acceptable to me. Thats me though.....

Agreed. I don't expect him to meet the price exactly as the 1.3 is a VS1 and the 1.4 is a VS2. But if he came within $600 or so I'd support him. I'm buying the setting from him no matter what, and the $1400 includes a price break I'll get on the setting if I get the diamond from him.

He's been fantastic to work with - he could have easliy pointed out reasons why the larger stone I brought in wasn't as good, but he openly agreed that is was also an amazing diamond and hard to find fault in it.
