Hi all

I'm new to pricescope and after reading a number of your very useful forums am keen to get your opinion on the diamond I'm looking at for my engagement ring.

My requirements are for an eye clean stone that is very sparkly and as large as possible within our budget (approx AUD$10k), and I am not too fussed about colour and clarity as long as the stone still looks gorgeous. I'm thinking of going for a very plain setting like a Cartier 1895 or Tiffany setting in either white gold or platinum.

I really want to get an authenticated stone with a certificate because I will be buying it from an overseas jeweller so am focusing on GIA certified stones. However, I've just received the first quote within my budget which is over 1.1 carat (and well over it at 1.38 - see details below).

So - my key questions for the gurus on this forum are as follows:

- is there a big difference between GIA, EGL US and EGL Europe certification standards?
- what do you think of the stats of this stone:

Shape - RD
Carat - 1.38
Colour -G
Clarity -vs1
Certificate -EGL (Europe)
Cut -Excellent
Polish -Excellent
Symmetry - Excellent
Fluorescence - None
Measurements - 7.11 - 7.05 x 4.45 mm

Really appreciate your input pricescopers! Thanks

Well you already know that the color and clarity are likely to be lower than if it were graded by GIA or AGS. But we need more information. To give you an opinion based on its cut. Immediately based on the dimensions alone I would say that its too deep. Id also bet that we could find you a comparable diamond graded by GIA or AGS for the same cost as this stone. Remember diamonds are priced for what they are worth. If this diamond cost $8000 then its only as good as a GIA of the same Ct. Weight that sells for $8000 and that might mean a GIA I SI1 instead of your Egl G VS1.

Man, Christina, I think you're the resident EGL expert here! Seems like there are sooooooooooo many EGL based questions and you're right there to guide them! :appl:

Thanks so much for your help!

I take your point that the ring I posted details about sounds too deep - I thought the cost seemed strangely less than other similar rings I'd received quotes for. I'm thinking of sticking to a GIA stone rather than an EGL one.

I'm now considering one of these two:

RD
1.25
G
vs1
GIA
Cut - Excellent
Polish - Excellent
Symmetry - Excellent
Flourecence - None
6.85 - 6.90 x 4.29
table 56%
slightly thick 2.5%
depth 62.4%

OR

RD
1.22
H
Si1
GIA
Cut - Excellent
Polish - Very Good
Symmetry - Excellent
Flourecence - none
6.89 - 6.92 x 4.18
I don't know the measurements of this one

Any opinions and help would be gladly appreciated! Thanks!

We are going to need more information to give you an opinion on the next two. Is it possible for you to post the GIA report #? Do you have images of the stone? If you don't have this information, if you could list the the table, depth, crown angle and pavilion angle for each stone, and also tell us what the inclusions and placement is of the SI1?

I think it's a great idea that your sticking with GIA. The dimensions look more promising then the first one you listed, but the depth of the first GIA stone is still a bit deeper than I would like, but not enough to eliminate it as an option yet. We will be in a much better position to make a suggestion based on the additional information I asked for.
