Hi everyone,
Long time lurker. I went in last week to look at diamonds with my girlfriend, working with a local wholesaler. He showed us a large collection of diamonds, and when push came to shove my girlfriend decided she wanted a larger SI1 versus a VS.
The diamond she finally settled on was an oval 2.30ct rated a "D" color and SI1. This was certified by EGL International. Before you bite at me, I understand EGL tends to rate things much more generously. However, having viewed a number of diamonds, this one was very very clear, no yellow tint at all as compared to all the other diamonds I viewed. I believe it is a D, or very close to it.
It sparkled, quite well, and the inclusions it did have were only visible if I put the thing two inches from my eye and even then you had to turn it quite a bit to finally locate it. My girlfriend was pleased, out of 15 diamonds, she absolutely loved it.
Final price? $20,500. Doing some searches online, it looks like a good deal assuming the specs are right. Given she was okay with an SI1, I'm okay with paying a bit more over online wholesale pricing so we can visually inspect the diamond. Report is attached.
My question is this:
1. Does the cut of the oval seem okay? From what I'm looking at online, the depth seems a bit low, and that has me worried.
2. Should I be doing anything extra since it is EGL International? Independent appraisal I assume?
3. Anything about ovals I should be aware of, especially in regard to inclusions and their locations?
4. Does the price seem right considering the specs and the fact it is EGL International? Should I ask for a further discount?
Again, she was very happy with the diamond. That is obviously the most important thing. I just want to ensure I am getting a fair deal here.
Thanks for any advice you can lend to me.
