So I am hunting for the perect diamond for my extremely tight budget. I went to a jeweler yesterday and looked at a couple stones, but I am not 100% confident with them yet.

I have a question though about size.

My original stone, that was damaged recently, was a fair cut stone. It was 2 carats and the size was 7.73x7.78 (the stone was given to FI and me by my FMIL). I am looking for a similar stone in size appearance (obviously ok with going a tad bigger in millimeters, up to 8ish or so).

My question is how obvious is the size difference of a stone that is 7.6 mm to a stone that is 7.8 mm then to a stone that is 8 mm. I know we are speaking tenths of millimeters here, but I really liked the look of the size of the last stone.

I know my budget can''t get me a 2ct, but if I can find a 1.90ct that would be awesome.

Anyone have any input on size of a stone as in millimeters.

Thank you!

Here is a carat to MM size chart, for greater accuracy deduct around .1mm from the dimensions given.

Also it is generally said that a difference of half a MM will be noticable to most people, but this depends on direct or indirect comparison and individual size perception. Going by dimensions of the actual diamond rather than the weight can be a good approach, also avoid thick girdles and also excess depth as this can hide weight. The other day an expert was saying you can compare by drawing an X to the proportion of the diamond, then cutting the circle on paper. This way you can get some idea of how the various sizes may look if you can't compare actual diamonds. I don't know if this is practical for you, but may be worth a try. Also the larger the diamond, the less you will notice MM increases if you want to go bigger.

Thanks for that chart, but do you know if there is a visible difference looking at the diameter of a 7.6mm to a 7.8 mm to a 8 mm?

I know that a 7.6 is roughly 1.6 ct and 7.8 is like 1.75ct and 8 is roughly 2ct. But I am curious what they all look compared to each other.

This is a RB right? My 1.77 RB measures 7.75 x 7.80. It is very well cut, so the spread is very good on it. I can definitely see a difference going from that to a 2.0ct though, when compared side by side. You can go slightly under 2.0ct in a well cut well spread stone and still have very close to the 8.0 size you want.

thanks lyra!

I probably will have to stick to around 1.6 to 1.8. Which is totally fine. I was just curious if there was much of a difference.
