Hi all,

I just want to start off by saying that this web site has been incredibly helpful with all aspects of the ER shopping process. I''ve been reading through here for about a month. Just last week I purchased a ring setting from a company called Village Jewelers in Arlington, TX. I actually live in Seattle, although was down there visiting family and by dumb luck found the perfect setting I know she''ll love. On another note, at first I was all about getting an Asscher for this setting to complement the Asscher shaped Halo setting; although the more I read about Asschers on pricescope, I have found that smaller Asschers are not really the best way to go. I''m going to purchase the diamond from Blue Nile and have it set by a trusted jeweler here in Seattle. I''ve like to receive some feedback on what type of stone should I purchase.

I went to the Jeweler today and they mentioned that the current prongs "should" be able to fit a .55 - .65 carat stone. They did not mention anything about the mm (w x d). Isn''t this also an issue? Should I ask them about that or worry about working with them since it''s not something they mentioned. I''d also like to get people''s opinions on what is a reasonable price for the setting below. I know the image quality is not very good but I want to feel that wasn''t ripped off. I''ll share what I paid for it after I get some feedback, but it has 46 itty bitty round brilliants total and 4 baguettes on the top of the halo in each corner. it''s 18k White gold and tcw is 0.40.

Thanks!

MFG

Is the setting a designer setting? that will affect the price. it''s hard to tell the quality from the pic too but the style looks very similar to beverley k designs. You can look at Pearlmans website, all the prices are listed and you might find something in the same ballpark. but we''d be mostly just guessing here.

here''s the link to some similar settings so you can get an idea for price. again though, workmanship and designer come into play..

Ok, first off...if you aren''t going to get an asscher, what are you going to get? A square radiant or a princess? Why do you think small asschers are not the way to go? I would ask what mm stone the setting can hold because depending on what type of stone you get the ct. weight may be different. For example an asscher may be .65ct but smaller in mm than a .65 princess. Therfore you''d be better served knowing the dimensions of the setting. I have to be honest, I think most people find a stone first and then find a setting but you did it backwards so we are going to have to work with it.

As far as what you paid, you can proably do some comparison shopping pretty easily at a local jewler. There are some variations in cost that we wouldn''t be able to tell based on the info you gave. For example, what color and clarity are the setting stones? How much gold was required to make the setting? How much is the dealer marking it up? All unkowns.

Another pic. If I don''t get an Asscher it would be a princess. I''m only concerned about not getting an Asscher between 05 - .65 because It seems that every where I read on price scope, people are saying that an asscher of that carat size looks much smaller and the unique steps are not as noticable in the smaller asschers.

About the ring setting... I like your quote the, setting is EXCACTLY what I was looking for. The price tag was set at 2,690,. I said no way, she came back with an offer of 2,000, I said maybe, we settled on 1,900.

It is a very pretty setting but I don''t know that much about white gold costs so I can''t comment on that. Its better to go with what you want exactly. I just went through this myself with my setting. Why get something else when you can have exactly what you want.

Ok, lets talk about the stone. A .65 asscher most likely will face up smaller than a .65 princess however I wouldn''t be concerned about comparing the cuts of stones to one another and mm because you already have the setting. All you need to do if make sure that the stone you are considering will fit in your current setting. It may mean you need to go to a .71 asscher but you need to know the dimensions (mm) that the setting can hold, not the carat weight. Also, I have .50 carat square emerald cut earings and you can see the steps. That means they are .25ct each, now that is small. You can''t tell what it is from a distance but you can up close. Yes, the steps are smaller but so what. If you want an asscher then get an asscher. From a distance people think my earings are princess cut anyway.

Ok, so I measuered the width and length of the prongs an they are exactly 5 mm. I found an asscher on Blue Nile within my budget that is .71c. The dimensions on that diamond are 5.06 x 4.85 x 3.20 mm. I''m not sure how diamonds are set and if the prongs need to be exactly the same mm length and width of the diamonds but with the measurements of both the diamond and the Prongs, do you think that diamond would work?
