I''ve been perusing this forum as well as sites like bluenile and GoodOldGold for a couple weeks and am getting a little more comfortable with purchasing a diamond on-line, particularly after seeing the mark ups on retail stones at a couple local jewelers. This forum is incredible!

I am interested in your opinions of a Canadian stone I''ve found on GoodOldGold. It passes the HCA screening test, is an I color, SI1 clarity diamond. It seems to be a nice looking gem based on the quantitative analysis. However, it prices right at the price point that I would expect from a Rap report I got my hands on from June 1, 2006. I was under the impression that Canadian diamonds commanded a premium? Of course, me being a novice, I probably shouldn''t even be looking at the Rap report, but I am a very curious novice!

Here is a link to the stone:

Any input and all opinions are welcome!

The premium is about 5% which is in effect the charge from Canada Mark for registering the diamond, so right around Rap is not surprising. Didn''t look at the report by the way to remain impartial as a competitive vendor...

I don''t know much about canadian diamonds, so I will comment on the actual diamond. This diamond is cut slightly deep, but all of the other cut parameters are right on. This diamond should be very beautiful, but will face up a touch smaller than other diamonds of the same carat weight since it is a little deep. This difference will be slight, but something you should be aware of.

actually the stone is very slightly shallow, but appears to be leaking around the outer edges because the upper girdle facets have been slightly dug out (making the steepr) - the azimuth shift is about 2 degrees.

the amount of digging is not very large. It is still a very nice stone.
It was down graded by AGS from 0 to 1 because of the "excellent" rather than Ideal symmetry.

This is the opposite to painting that you may have heard about.
