Open back v solid back - men's platinum ring

Hi all, for a men's platinum diamond (cushion) ring, is it common to have a solid back? I am told by a jeweler that the platinum ring (in my design) would be 26 g, if with a solid back, vs if with a open back, it would be 14 g. Would the solid back be impractical due to weight? It would be the mid finger.

Also, perhaps more importantly, is there an "industry practice" to go for an open back design? i.e. if left unsaid, the presumption is that a ring is with an open back?

Thanks a million!

I dislike solid back rings for most diamonds. For colored stones I use them if the stone is weak in saturation and I want to make it look richer. With a diamond it's just adding unnecessary weight, makes it harder to clean, and has zero impact on the appearance (unless it's a very shallow, or rose cut)
