About to get an engagement ring - spending about 5.000 USD. My girlfriend has 9.5 US in ring size.
It seems like this is slightly larger than normal - which I find odd but still...

Anyway, I am looking online for settings - and with both Whiteflash and Blue Nile it is a problem with timing - since I need the ring delivered in Miami next Friday Aug 24th.

Now, James Allen can do it, but unfortunately I do not like the settings they have. I am thinking either a channel ring or a sidestone, but am struggling to find a setting I like with them. (!) I like this Tacori amongst others - 2510 - but that is both hard to get ahold of and far too pricey. Thinking about 1200-2000 for the setting (WG 18k or Platinum) and then 3000 for the diamond.

Any advise? This is urgent!

Advice? Yes. Don't rush this purchase. Forget whatever you're trying to propose for on the 24th. Take TIME. You don't want to screw this up because you were in a rush, or choose something out of a hasty decision. So if you can do that, please take your time! It sounds like the 24th might be a very special date for you, but you can commemorate the day in other fun ways :)) without a ring.

Your budget cannot get a Tacori, so ignore that. Don't buy "brand" settings. If I had a $5k budget, I'd buy the best $4500 stone I can get, and use $500 to get a simple solitaire. I don't have any advice on size, but I figures jewelers can resize rings within a few minutes, so that shouldn't be a problem if it's a simple solitaire.

Can you call IDJ and speak with Yekutiel? See if he can build you something for your budget, and tell him if he *is* capable of sending it so that you receive it by the 24th?

Are you sure her finger is really size 9.5? There was a poster here who was convinced she was a 10.5, turned out she was a 7.5. My thumb is a size 8, and I'm not a small person. My husband's ring size is 9. I'd just double-check that you have the correct size, because while many plain settings can be resized, rings aren't really designed to be resized by several sizes.

I think you should wait for another occasion. I agree with PP that you should get the biggest diamond for your budget and get a plain solitaire, then maybe upgrade the setting before the wedding or for an anniversary.

As a lady with a large finger, 11.25 or so, I want to empathize with your GF and sympathize with you. Can't try anything on, can't look at samples, no buying off the rack, etc.

My ring is from BGD and they were most helpful. What they may recommend you do, if you haven't is go to a Tiffany's and try on bands to get size, in the mm that you want the ring to be in. Tiffany's has the most consistent sizing. Or, send in a ring that fits comfortably.

Good Luck! :)

Y'know, I know the "spend on the rock and save on the setting" philosophy is the most common one here on PS, but...

If she likes Tacori as well, well, that's a LONG way from a basic plain solitaire. And we PSers are an odd group in that we tend to look at diamonds and settings as separate entities, but most folk don't really note that distinction so much as looking at the *ring* as a whole unit... for someone with those tastes I would go the route you were originally considering - 3k on the stone and splurge on a more elaborate setting, I would think that would be more fulfilling as a whole unit than a slightly larger/higher-spec'd stone in a nondescript setting.

Really depends on how she prioritizes. Either way I completely, totally agree with PPs - PLEASE don't rush this.

+1 to Yssie.
I always look at this as more holistic.
A diamond by itself looks nothing like it will in a ring- and that can be a huge part of what the lady is looking for.
A agree also with the advice to double check the finger size.
If an existing ring is size 6, and it needs to go to size 9, it's an extensive job ( to do right) and even more complicated if there's stones going down the side.
In many cases it will require a new shank to be placed on the ring.
SO_ make sire of the size, and work with a seller who has manufacturing capabilities to be able to do the work- hopefully in the right time-frame.

But if he does go and buy that Tacori, it would pretty much be impossible to get my the 24th, no? I don't believe Tacoris come stocked in that size? I figures if he gets a plain peg head solitaire for less than $500, so that she can at least have a pretty sparkly for a proposal, and maybe they can work on getting a setting for her later?

Sorry, I totally get that some people are all about setting! I am, too, kinda :wink2: OP just has to find a good 'medium' that will be pleasing to him. Can the deadline get extended? Does it have to be Tacori, or can it be Tacori-like? What kind of diamond and the specs he is hoping for.. and then from that, order the priority :naughty:

I truly do hope that OP doesn't rush, though. Too many rushed stories on RT!

Ditto on Yssie's feeling, just because a more elaborate setting can boost up a smaller diamond into a more substantial ring.

Definitely take your time, any great setting takes weeks or up to a month to get. If you want it look substantial on her hand - you should look into a halo setting or a three stone setting. Gabriel & Co has some very lovely Tacori-esque settings on a budget : www.gabrielengaged.com If you insist on getting it by the 24th, I'm sure JA can get you a stock setting.
