... is how articulate the posters are as well as decent typists. I don''t care about misspellings or typos and I can overlook grammatical errors and missed capitalization - heck I do all of that. But I''m glad the number of people who speak in teenage text talk is very low. My mind feels at peace when I read here :)

Haha, agreed! I''m on a some animal forums and there are a fair number of teenagers (from 13-18). Their grammar and spelling always gets me! I''ll give you some leeway if you''re 13, but the 18 year olds should know better. They don''t use teen-speak either, they just have poor grammar and spelling. Their teachers would be appalled

I agree wholeheartedly. I talk on horse forums and there are several people with bad spelling or grammar, or those who post in HUGE colored letters (enough already!). I love being here... I love experiencing articulate and intelligent people. I enjoy that this is very much a community, and that there are always interesting discussions.

I used to moderate on a forum geared for relationship issues, sexuality, and so forth. It attracted a lot of teenage members with that sort of grammar and spelling and teen-speak. Unfortunately, most of the members were in their 20's and a great number STILL had that sort of grammar and spelling, never mind being articulate! There is something sad about a 20 or 30-something who uses teen speak (and then argues it is easier to write that way....I guess understanding it is not a concern?).

Eventually the drama, and the grammar, got to me and I handed in my moderating badge and never went back. Ha!

I know my grammar and punctuation skills on forums tend to take a bit of a nose-dive (exclamation mark, anyone?) In my real life, and particularly my career, I am very particular about writing so I relax a little bit on here and write more "train of thought" but at least I spell out complete words!

HAHA...nice! I don''t know though, LOL is better than UR.

I don''t think it''s excusable for a 13 year old. If anything, they are the ones that should be spelling properly with proper grammar. When they don''t, I just feel sad for the world.

I like this forum because it''s random, and doesn''t have to be about jewelry.

I agree! It''s refreshing!

A girl on one of the forums is an older teenager and homeschooled (through one of those online programs) and she has the worst spelling of all time. I just can't believe some of the words she spells wrong!
horrible = horibal
half = halve
a while = awail
whole = hole

It's like everything she types is phonetic, instead of actually spelled correctly. Drives me bonkers.

well I admit I''m an LOLer... it''s a habit learned in 1996 :)

This does seem to be a trend in younger generations. Even my own (which makes me sad). My sister smells Tomorrow Tomarrow.

The ones that get me the worst though are things that aren''t any shorter in text speak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like putting a z instead of an s... really? That just looks dumb. I know there''s other slang spellings for things that don''t even abbreviate the word. Drives me up a wall.

Oh yeah!! That drives me crazy. I''m like, hmm, because ONE letter difference that would make the word CORRECT, is so hard! Where, it takes so much more effort to misspell the word in the first place. Geeze!

It should be pretty clear when I post from work versus at home. At work I use IE, so links work, but I spell things wrong. My Firefox at home does not post links but does catch spelling errors. I have poor spelling because I have congenital amusia, but I speak very well and have very good grammar. My DH is an English major so he is the same way. I always thought well spoken men were so much sexier, so it was nice to find him since in my age group, (mid 20s) that is a bit of a dificult find. Still, growing up in a family that knows which its and their to use and how to properly use whom and whomever is nice.

Text speak drives me truly crazy, there is a reason there are no great pieces of work coming out in that language, but in real life, NOTIHNG bothers me more than a double negative. I know most languages allow it and English is wierd like that, but it is just so wrong.

I dropped the forum I was at with people my age in no small part because of the unreadability of their posts.

I agree with you!!!!
I learned English in my mid-20''s and still, to this day, I look over my sentences 5 or 6 times before I submit anything.
It is hard for me even now to construct decent phrases as I feel that I don''t always convey rightfully what I am trying to express. But even for an "immigrant" I think I display above average phrasing and grammar. :)

Amethyst - I had no idea you weren''t american born... where did you come from?

There are lots of things that we could get picky about but most of them don''t bother me... it''s the l33t sPeAk lolz cu l8r stuff.... I can handle brb and lol... but the things that take just as much work to do wrong as to do write irritate me the most.
