One of The Poway Synagogue Heroes

"This is the Army veteran who chased the gunman out of the Poway synagogue". That is the title of an article in "The LA Times" about a 51 year old Orthodox Jewish man who decided, at the last minute, to pursue the gunman rather than to flee the synagogue. He tried to stay within five feet of the shooter so that the gunman could not use his rifle on him. Oscar Stewart is an electrician who was deployed to Iraq for a year in 2003. He served with the rank of sergeant.

A sixty year old woman, Lori Gilbert-Kaye, who was the only fatality, threw herself in front of the rabbi to protect him.

Thank you for posting this. It made my cry. I get so down about how much greed and selfishness and hate I see around us these days and I needed a reminder that heroes are all around us still too.

I have a grand niece (step actually) my nephew's step daughter. She is a conservative Jew, her Dad is a conservative jew obviously, her mom had to convert to marry the dad then they divorced after 2 children, my nephew married her mom, mom has 2 mom kids with my nephew.. after the last synogogue attack this 13 year old said to her mom, "I'm so glad my little sister doesn't have a Jewsh sounding last name Mommy, because when they come for us she won't be killed" and this after that one before this. This is a SWEET, kind, bubbly young girl, full of life, full of happiness that sees these grim, horrible things happening and tried to put a spin on her little sister (and now baby bro) since they aren't being raised Jewish.. SUCKS. SUCKS. and I despise this, I feel so sad for this girl, worrying about her older sister, 2 little sisters and brother on her Dad's side (yes these are propogating exes! ) none the less, I hate she had to think this way.
