came across this online today and it appears to be real.

i''ve certainly heard of this sort of thing - shock obscuring extreme pain, or people being unaware of broken limbs etc due to being in a crisis situation etc.

but i''ve never seen a photo of it.....

BEWARE - this is an extreme and potentially upsetting photo of a woman taken in a russian hospital after a mugging.

but it''s also an incredible example of how the human body protects itself and deals with trauma.

horrific - but fascinating.

WOW. I''ve heard of this happening before, but never seen anything like THIS! How extraordinary. I''m glad she''s ok!

I''m so curious... but afraid to look.

someone else look first please and tell me how bad it is.

It isn''t that bad, and it''s grainy as heck, so you can''t see TOO much.

Whoa that''s insane! Noelwr, it''s not as bad as images on the Discovery show "Impaled." I watched that last night between my fingers

. It''s not too too horrific...

MonkeyPants -

i can only *begin* to imagine what a show called 'impaled' must look like!

the mind boggles....

and noelwr - it's not too bad - the woman in question is on her feet in a hospital - she's not a victim of a bashing, or anything like that, which i would find *much* more upsetting... (and wouldn't post, for that matter)

i just think this is *fascinating*

My goodness. The human body really is astounding.

I watched a Discovery show on this once. It happens more often than you would think.

Impaled. I love that show. I have only seen it once and it was awesome! I had to watch between my fingers with my teeth gritting for some of the parts too. The one I saw had a young guy who had only been in the military for 5 months and was sent over seas. His job was to be a gunner, the guy who sits on top of the tank with the huge gun. He said that their caravan was going through sketchy territory and then unfriendly fire erupted. He said that he heard a loud noise and then that was it. He looked down and somehow an RPG had impaled him and not gone off. I went in right below his rib cage and was resting on his pelvic bone (I think that is what it is called, that is what it looked like from the Xray they showed) on the opposite side of his body. He said that he did not feel any pain, but was scared. They took him to the infirmary and the doctors on call are not supposed to help him in this situation because it could go off and kill everyone in the hospital, but the doctor said that he could not look this boy in the face and refuse to help him. They took an Xray and saw that the blasting cap had somehow been knocked off before it lodged in him. They were still concerned because the detonator was still intact. A bomb expert came against the militarys wishes and they pulled back the boys flesh so that he could stabalize the detonator and then they cut it out as best they could and pulled it the remaining way out. The bomb expert took the RPG to a bunker and blew it up. The boy is fine, has a nasty scar, but has no lasting problems. Now that is AMAZING!

Sorry to threadjack, but that is an incredible story and it is along the same lines as the knife.

and DandiAndi - i'm with you; the human body really *is* ASTOUNDING!

(i dont know that i can get over a show called 'impaled' tho....yikes!)

Oh my lord... That poor woman!!

The human body is a truly amazing thing!!

That''s so crazy! I completely believe it though. My father was shot in his thigh in Vietnam and didn''t realize it for quite a while. With all the intense fighting going on he said he never realized it and kept on going with everything. Crazy stuff. I get upset over a papercut, let alone a knife in my back. LOL

oh dear.. amazing!

Imagine the horror her poor parents experienced when she arrived home, shocking...
