As we all know, Valentine's day is coming up (and perhaps less known, my birthday is soon after that!) and I have my mind set on a ring with a heart-shaped stone. I was initially looking for a large heart-shaped colored stone ring, but somehow I ended up looking at diamonds :naughty:. Normally diamonds would never cross my mind since we are saving up for a house, but I found a heart shaped diamond, over a half carat with acceptable cut, color and clarity (for me) and a nice length to width ratio at the best price I've seen for its stats. It's more than I wanted to have my husband spend, but it's definitely not too far of a stretch. I've always had a thing for heart diamonds...I have a diamond "heart" promise ring, which is really a princess and two half moons in a halo, but I've never had a solitaire diamond of any kind.

This is the first time I've ever had that "falling in love" feeling with a diamond (a diamond that I could ever come close to affording, at least!) and I'm thinking of taking the plunge and letting the hubs know that this is it, but I have a concern. I have "fat" fingers :(. I'm a 7.75 but I wear an 8 so I have room to stack. The stone I am looking at is 5.22 x 5.78 x 3.23 mm and if I decide I want it, I will ask for a simple solitaire setting for the time being (upgrade to a halo/other new setting later). So I'm concerned about my finger dwarfing the stone. I have diamond bands I can stack with it, but still...I don't anticipate being in a place where I'd feel comfortable shelling out thousands for a 2-3ct (what my finger probably needs) any time remotely soon. I just don't want it to look ridiculously tiny. I'm also nervous as it's our first loose diamond purchase.

Any thoughts/advice on the size of the stone in ratio to my finger or other concerns?

Have you considered putting it in a bezel setting? It tends to make the stone look larger than it truely is. The only bad
thing is that if the cuts not that great then it can block out a lot of light and make the stone look dull. Do you have any
up close pictures of the stone?

Here is a pear bezel for example...

DanielM on etsy can probably do it in SS and gold to keep the price down.

I don't have a photo of the stone. That's the other thing. I'd have to buy it based in the report, which looks good to me for my preferences and budget. I know I'll be able to send it back if I'm not happy with it, but unfortunately I don't have a picture.

I wouldn't want to bezel set it (just not my personal style). I'm thinking either a tapered cathedral setting or a traditional solitaire. I'm wondering if I should put it in a higher setting? High settings don't bother me...would that make it look bigger?

At some point in time I would put it in a nicer setting to maximize the size of the stone.

Yes, higher settings would make it look bigger. Is the stone returnable? If so, you can order and see how the size looks with
your size finger.

Truthfully, since you have some beautiful larger colored stone rings, I think that size diamond is going to be extremely small for you unless it is set in some kind of halo setting, and that would require custom since it is a heart. I really would encourage you to look for a heart shape colored stone for this project so you could get a more significant size. Plus, pink or red would be perfect!

Thanks, diamondseeker. I don't think it would look that bad, as I have a ring with a similar sized stone and it looks OK...but I definitely wear larger stones most of the time. I agree this size diamond in a solitaire setting won't make a huge impact on my finger. Maybe it would still look pretty, though.

I'm still waffling between heart diamond and heart colored stone, but if I DID get the diamond I would have my jeweler set it in a halo later on down the line...eventually, it would be placed in a setting that would give it more size and bling.

Lovebug, those are soo pretty

...but waaaay over my budget! LOL!

I've never been a heart shaped fan, but i do LOVE those DBL ones as well!

I1 on this one, but better priced I think

Again, not sure what your budget is! But I think a halo looks phenomenal with a heart shaped stone.

Although this one is super cute, not sure you'll get the finger coverage you're looking for though.

Yeah, that last one you showed me is definitely small!

If I go .50 or higher, I think I'll be OK. I could wear it stacked with my diamond bands for now, and ideally I would upgrade it to include large halo to really amp up the size, and an all-around better/bigger/bling-ier setting. I'm going to show my husband some heart-shaped colored stone ring options I like, and throw the diamond into the mix of options as well and just leave it up to him to decide what he buys me. He knows I've always loved heart shaped diamonds .
