I am a new poster but have lurked and enjoyed browsing Pricescope for some time.

Here is my ?: I got engaged in 2004 (married Jan. 06). The original setting BENT and so had a new setting done last May. I have a pear shape stone set as a solitaire. It is now a little loose in the setting, so I am taking it in to have the prongs checked/tightened. When the new setting was done, I personally thought the stone looked a little tilted in the setting. The jeweler said it looked that way because of the girdle, and that it was set to have the table flat. I still think, as do other people who look at it, that it looks a bit tipped. Can I ask them to address this when I take it in to be tightened, or would this mean yet another setting?

BTW: This is not the same jeweler as the original setting.

If your stone's girdle is tipped, there's not much a setter can do because the girdle goes where the prongs are notched. So pick your choice, would you prefer to have the side view look tipped, or the table look tipped? I think it is safer to the table to remain flat plus no one except yourself will see the tipped sideview (whereas most will be able to spot a tipped table). If you want to change it, a new setting may not be needed, but you may need the prongs to be rebuilt.

I totally understand and appreciate your answer. The thing is the table does look tipped, and in the same direction as the girdle. I think this is accentuating any wave or tip of the girdle. The girdle and table did not look like this in the original setting. It seems like down the road I may need to address this by having yet another setting done. I just wondered if it would do anything for me to bring it up now, since the stone is loose in the setting.

Does it look like this? If you notice, the stone is set tilted...the back of the pear is a little higher than the front. That was not intended. That was the lesser of two evils, the first being that they set the stone slanted - higher on the left than the right. I was so disgusted after that, and the way that they didn''t redo the prongs when they were supposed to fix it, just sorta smooshed them, that I didn''t want to bother with that jeweler anymore and let it stay slightly tilted downward, which was better than crooked.

However, if you''re having your prongs tightened and it''s just jeweler incompetence, it should be corrected. If the girdle is slanted with respect to the table, not much you can do. However, in my case, it is jeweler incompetence, as the girdle and table are both slanted to the same degree.

I would definately have the prongs redone. I had a similar issue with my pear when it was set. It had to be redone 3 times because they kept setting it crooked! It drove me nuts! It sounds to me like it might be the jewelers incompetence. I hope you are able to get it fixed the way you want. I know what a bummer it is to have a beautiful ring you love but don''t like to look at because of a setting flaw. Good luck

Thank you all so much for the replies.

Mine seems tipped down on the left side from the back, and right side to the front. I thought so at the time the setting was done, which is when I was told by the jeweler that the it was the girdle. My husband was getting squeamish on asking them to do more.

We had such a headache on the initial setting, which was a custom setting done by the people from whom my husband bought the stone. He assumed they knew how to do it, and felt very bad that it ended up not working. After having it tightened three times in the first three months, and then having the band crumple after a year and a half (turned into an ellipse), we were off to another jeweler.

I wish I had insisted that this be corrected at the time, but we were told it was because of the stone. At which point it felt hard to argue, I guess, and I knew my husband was getting uncomfortable. Not what you want to hear about the stone you picked out to propose with, and for which he went everywhere searching.

Anyway, what it really looks like to me is that the whole stone is set slightly off center of the bottom of the setting to the left, and so then when they tightened/finished the prongs, it tipped.

I know it would help if I could post photos. I need my husband''s help for that.

Since it''s been over a year since we had this setting made, are we sort of out of luck in terms of having it corrected? In that case it may make sense to just have them tighten the prongs? These people have their own co., but used to work for one of the biggies. I felt that the workmanship should have been a little better, but I also know I am really picky. I do not know if the prongs could be redone, as it is custom and then I think the whole setting would have to be redone?

Thanks

Thought I''d let those of you who nicely replied to me today that I got a fairly good result at the jewelers.

The prong at the tip was the culprit as far as the looseness went. It also seems like when they tightened it they may have actually straightened the stone out in the setting a bit. I decided not to make a huge fuss for today. As long as I was just having them tighten it, I didn''t want them to make it WORSE!!!

Thanks all for your help.

I''ll post some photos soon.
