when it comes to choosing a diamond?

must all the specs be perfect?
must that G SI1 look like a F VS2?
are you more picky if you were buying for a ring then for earrings or pendant?

DF,

I like a tight stone, Perfect for me is a matter of number crunching variances, & looking at optical symettry.

I like a eye-clean si-1 and prefer J''s because of the value.

Earrings, Still have to be killer cut, but s-1/i-1 is fine 2 me.

I am very picky but realistic. My stone for my ring had to have very specific specs. My earrings are old mine and I just bought them because they were beautiful... so i guess i am a 9

I'd rate myself as a 6 on the picky scale.

As long as the ring is "eye clean" and bright, I'm not overly picky about specs. What DOES drive me crazy are problems with pave set diamonds. If I see a stone that doesn't match or doesn't line up evenly, I will tend to focus on the flaw every time I look at the ring. That's a real downside for someone like me who loves pave settings.

I'm less fussy about pendants and I don't wear earrings.

1-10 about a 7

I usually go VS but I''ll take a J in a heartbeat with a super cut and great sparkle. Earrings, not so much. They must sparkle and can''t look like they have been rolling around in dust. LOL

i too prefer a nice tightly cut stone, but that tightly cut stone might have a dark inclusion in the wrong location or i might find a nice clean SI1 with variances all over the map,so where should the buyer draw the line?

I am too picky I think. Well, for a cheapskate

I have the size and color just right after 2 upgrades, but now I am working on clarity.

As picky as my budget will allow

Well. I require a well-cut stone - I wouldn''t buy a dirt cheap poorly cut 5ct D IF unless I knew I could have it recut. Outside of that I''ll reorder my priorities based on budget and availability.. I might want an H, but if there''s a great I I''ll at least check it out.

I''m FOR SURE more picky for a ring than earrings or pendant.

That is why I''m having so much trouble trying to find the best diamond for my engagement ring.

In general, I just think for earrings and pendant, ppl won''t be sticking their nose right against your ear or your chest to ADMIRE your diamond.... but i think for a ring, ppl will. HAHA... That''s my silly theory.

100% picky, but not based on paper.

It needs to be eyeclean (don''t care what the grade is, at all).
It needs to be a pleasing colour for the shape. I prefer a cushion with a little warmth, step cuts I like to be facing up white (don''t care what the grade is, at all)
Cut needs to be exquisite (I''m not a huge RB fan, so I''m talking about fancy shapes here).

More than any of the above, the diamond has to speak to me. I have to like its personality. It has to have personality. That''s one of the reasons I always go with a vendor with a good return policy.

I am picky about fancy's though. I have to love the facet pattern, and I can't deal with bowties, they drive me batty. I'd rather sacrifice elsewhere than sacrifice on cut.

As long as its a great cut I can compromise on colour and clarity.

It really depends on what I am buying. Something like earrings I just want it relatively eyeclean but I like them to be pretty much colorless. I don't go for "perfect cut" there either. I have a specific look I go for with them and as long as they look the way I want I am happy.

Larger diamonds for other items I am pickier on. I am drawn to more square shapes but don't like a lot of visible X in the center. So while I want them to be a great cut, I need the stone to speak to me.

I am a very visual person so I go with what my eye says looks good. I do check it out in all lighting though so don't think I don't scrutinize, I just need it to all be a certain look in general. I need them to be a type of pattern that I am good with. Something like an ideal H&A cut round really does not appeal to me. So some patterns really kill a stone for me. That is why I mean about being visual. I need the stones patterns to be subtle in many ways. Paper numbers can help, but I need to go way beyond to find what I like. I prefer to use my eyes first and then check the numbers after.

Color doesn't matter much to me. Clarity needs to be very eye clean for a main stone.

I agree! Not a theory for me, a fact! With pendants or earrings, as long as they are sparkly, people will not be looking so closely into it because you would have to take them off. But with rings, they are able to take your hand and admire the ring up close and view the ring. Depending on the cut, color and clarity, I am either comfortable with people doing that or not.

I am super picky - almost a 10 - but I am also very realistic. I expect a G SI1 to look like a G SI1 and a F VS2 to look like a F VS2.

Same statement can apply for me!

8 and rising.

Since first joining PS in 2006, not only am I today older (more "mature") but I am also much more wise when it comes to diamond education.

So I would say the older and wiser I get the pickier I become and I`m not getting any younger.

Since I have a preference for antique diamonds, I''m not picky at all with the exception of eyeclean. I don''t care what they call it or how they''ve graded it on paper as long as I can''t see anything with my own peepers.

I am picky about clarity-I don''t want to see any inclusions. Picky about cut-has to have a HCA under 2, color and size not so much.

I'm about 7 on the picky scale.

My earrings are F and my two pendant are D and E. The D was given to me (so it's a bit of a moot point re: what I would choose) and the E was one I picked out. Going lower than an E for a larger pendant would be okay with me, however, I'd not go below an H even if that meant going with a smaller diamond.

My E pendant that I picked out is a VS2. . .if I had found a great SI1, I'd have considered it, but I'd never buy an SI2.

Oh, and cut: my earrings are ACAs and my E pendant is an ES. I was VERY picky about that and would any day sacrifice size for a superb diamond. The D I have is excellent cut, but not as impressive as my E. . .it does sparkle like crazy though. . .the type of diamond that shines rainbows across my steering wheel as I drive down the road on a sunny day.
