Olympics - Doping - your thoughts

Canada is currently 4th lol, so we are eagerly watching to see what happens.

I didn't (couldn't bring myself) to watch.

I read that she completely caved under pressure in the long program dropping her out of a medal.

I do wonder if she was told to throw her routine and if so, my heart goes our to her further as a victim of systemic abuse.

The pressure on the young competitors is unreal and yes abusive. The whole system is corrupt. I do not watch the Olympics anymore. It turns my stomach TBH. It is an evil and corrupt system and the children are the ones who pay the price. A dear price it is. :(

+1!

I just watched the free skate. The end, where she's breaking down, holding a stuffed toy and waiting for her score - completely heartbreaking.

She’s fifteen years old. There was no winning for her… No matter what happened in her free skate there would have been questioning and whispering. And no PED cocktail in the world could give just anybody that sort of mastery - this scandal overshadows her lifetime of sacrifice, and her body will pay the price for that sacrifice.

Fifteen. And goodness knows it's not like these girls are given opportunities to develop normal healthy relationships - emotionally she's probably much younger. All the adults in this mess should be fired. At the very least. Most of them deserve far worse.

I'm 100% for raising the minimum competition age. There's no pride to be had in exploiting abused children in some misguidedly corrupt parody of national "honour".

Poor kid…

That just breaks my heart to read that
she's 15
i doubt she desided to take those drugs off her own back
poor thing will have had no nornal life and now it will feel like everything is falling apart

I could not decide who I felt sorrier for – Valieva or the gold-medal winner who was left totally alone and could not really celebrate her victory. They all have a quad so I wonder if any of them are really clean. I was also heartbroken to see how Valieva was treated when she came off the ice. The coach did nothing to console her and instead asked her why she gave up. It’s criminal.
The silver medalist only added to the drama – throwing an all out temper tantrum because she was a machine who did a 5 quad jump-athon instead of a routine with any artistry? SMH.

But she’s just a child too. Another child who has been physically abused and emotionally neglected in the name of “sport”. No wonder she couldn’t keep any emotions in check. It so sad ;(

Good point. You are totally right which brings another thing up with these types of sports and that is we the public tend to have high expectations of these athletes who are only children after all.

It was heartbreaking to watch her sitting after her routine. She received no comfort or emotional support from the adults around her. She looked so devastated. No child should endure this much pressure.

Is that a Russia thing do you think?

Is that a Russia thing do you think?

I think doping itself is a Russian thing.
Sure, there has been doping in other countries, but apparently not nearly as widespread as with Russians.

But I have to add, another 'Russian thing' is the most astonishing, precise, elegant, perfect, mind blowing, seamless, fluid ice skating I could ever imagine was possible.
But if such perfection is only possible by abusing little bodies and minds and drugging kids, then our enjoyment these performances should be forbidden fruit.
And if the Russians are banned for doping, then why the F are they competing - under ANY name?
Bribery? :nono:

IMO this level of ice skating perfection would not be possible without violating human rights.
And does this outrage really deserve Gold metals of honor?
I'd say not.
