This is probably a dumb question, but here goes:

I have a 60-pt Tiffany rb solitaire e-ring with the traditional 6-prong knife-edge setting. It''s my birthday today, and my husband gave me a blue box with a note saying that my present is an upgrade. He''s done some scouting, and is planning on trading in this one for something 1.25-ish.

While I do -- definitely -- appreciate the gesture, I also know that Tiffany marks up the heck out of its diamonds and that I can get a bigger/nicer stone for much less $$ elsewhere. But I love my ring and my setting, and I want to keep it. It''s 13 years old, and solid as a rock.

I know Tiffany won''t put a non-Tiffany stone into a Tiffany setting, but what are the pitfalls of having another jeweler put a non-Tiffany stone into my Tiffany setting? Is this a good idea or a bad idea? Ballpark, what could I expect Tiffany to give us for a trade in for the little stone (it''s E, VVS2, ideal cut, don''t remember the other numbers)?

Never mind -- I just found the SuperbCert replica setting, which would be the ticket.

Next question: does anyone have experience with theses settings? It looks awfully good ....

I''ve seen the SC Tiff setting and the actual Tiff''s and I would go SuperbCert hands down. Their stones are amazing--Barry really knows what he is doing. I''d give them a shot.

PS I think you are making a smart choice--keeping your special original ring and buying from one of the top etailers for your stone/ring--you''ll still get the size/quality you want but because you won''t be paying Tiff markup fo nothing, you can have your cake and eat it too!

Just an update, in case anyone else is in a similar situation: I thought I was going to go the SuberbCert direction, but then T&Co evaluated the first ring at 90% of the purchase price. It was a much higher trade-in than I thought they would do.

All things considered, it ended up being no more expensive to upgrade to another T&Co ring. I got a 1.28 H VS1 for about $8K: $12K minus the $4K they gave us back for the other ring. That''s about what I would have paid for a comparable diamond and setting from a "better-priced" vendor, so I did the easy thing.

I know that other cuts are supposed to be better, etc. etc., but it''s not as if I went to Zales, either. I''m not really that into jewelry, and I''m very happy with what I have. I don''t know a local jeweler, and it''s easy to go to T&Co to get it cleaned and checked. (Is there a theme here? "Easy"?)

Anyway, I''ll go the internet vendor route for the NEXT diamond purchase, or recommend it to others .... This is great information around here.

hey sb, thanks for the update!!
all that matters is that you''re happy with your purchase, and it sounds like you are!!!

Many Congrats, SB!!

You made an informed choice and that''s what PScope is all about. Know what you''re doing and make the decision that''s right for you.

Ditto''s on the pics!! You should know that we all love eye candy here!!

I would attach a photo, but something is wrong with the link between my camera and computer. Which makes having a digital camera good for ... not much.

It's your basic Tiffany 6-prong setting, so you'll have to use your imagination. I broke my left pinky finger when I was a kid, and now it's quite crooked, so the picture of my hand isn't very pretty anyway! Maybe I need a 4 carat ring to distract from the weird finger .... hmmm......

Yes, a 4 carat is definitely the way to go!

You are already thinking like a Pricescoper!

When I come up with an extra $60K, I''ll get right on that!

I have already experienced the magical shrinking diamond, though. Last week this thing seemed huge. This week, eh, not so big.

Har! Har! Join the club, my 1.85 looks too small. It seemed so huge when I first got it, but not anymore, mine''s is from Tiffany''s too by the way. Don''t fret though, because if you had a 2 carat you''d want a 3 carat & so on & so on. I say save your money & buy something else. Big diamonds are nice but theres so much more you can do with the money!

By the way a diamond wedding band really adds to the beauty of the solitaire, it makes your diamond so eye-catching, I highly recommend you get one! Now that I have one I no longer crave a larger solitaire!

Okay, it''s me again. I think I got the picture to load; we shall see.

As far as getting a larger stone, no thanks. I agree that there are other purposes for $$. In fact, I can''t justify jewelry unless I donate an equal amount of money to church or some charity at the same time I (or husband) buy the jewelry. Eases the conscience. (Please don''t take that as a judgment against anyone who doesn''t do that -- I spend lots of money on hobbies and vacations and other things that I don''t match to charity. It''s just a personal hang-up.

Besides, as luck would have it, my solitaire seems big again. Yay! THe magical growing diamond!

Anyway, as you can see (hopefully, if the file uploads), it isn''t a very good photo. But I have a question: I have a plain little platinum wedding band as well as a channel-set anniversary type band. I''m sure there is some "proper" order in which to wear them -- or maybe not. I''ve ordered them this way because it just looks better to me; I like the diamond band flanked by the two thin platinum bands. Agree? Disagree? Reasons?

Trying upload again ... it seems to work, and then I get one of those "page not found" screens.

I love the T&Co solitates, that is what my mother has and it is to die for....Congrats you are a lucky woman!

In any event, congrats on your upgrade and so glad you are happy! To reiterate what you and others have said, easy is GOOD!

Hope to see your ring soon!
