This is probably a dumb question, but here goes:
I have a 60-pt Tiffany rb solitaire e-ring with the traditional 6-prong knife-edge setting. It''s my birthday today, and my husband gave me a blue box with a note saying that my present is an upgrade. He''s done some scouting, and is planning on trading in this one for something 1.25-ish.
While I do -- definitely -- appreciate the gesture, I also know that Tiffany marks up the heck out of its diamonds and that I can get a bigger/nicer stone for much less $$ elsewhere. But I love my ring and my setting, and I want to keep it. It''s 13 years old, and solid as a rock.
I know Tiffany won''t put a non-Tiffany stone into a Tiffany setting, but what are the pitfalls of having another jeweler put a non-Tiffany stone into my Tiffany setting? Is this a good idea or a bad idea? Ballpark, what could I expect Tiffany to give us for a trade in for the little stone (it''s E, VVS2, ideal cut, don''t remember the other numbers)?
