Old mine cushion fair symmetry but tons of sparkle

This is a ring from the 1920's-30's. I found it at a jeweler that specializes in estate jewelry and fell in love. There is no GIA report. He says it's G, SI1. It's very sparkly, more so than any of the others even though he says it's fair symmetry. My understanding is that in old mine cuts the symmetry can't really be held to today's standards. He's asking $10,200. 1.48ct, 0.66ct in surrounding G, VS diamonds. I absolutely love this ring, but would love some input. I am attaching some pictures. Thanks so much for any ideas/input.

Anyone? Is this a decent buy? Can the symmetry be forgiven when there is so much sparkle? I love this ring but want to make sure it's a good buy-i don't know much about diamonds, just know I like old rings. I'd really appreciate any input or thoughts.

I cannot tell a thing about the cut from your pictures due to the lack of detail. Please post super close ups of the stone using the macro function of the camera. Zoom in so that the stone fills almost the entire screen/viewer.

Oh, I guess that's the problem. Unfortunately, these pictures were taken in the store and I don't have access to the ring to re-take them. But thank you for responding!

As Chrono said, without detailed pics, it's hard to tell. Can you go back and take more pics or ask the jeweler to provide them? Keep in mind that without a gia report or appraisal, you don't really know if what the jeweler is saying about the ring is really true, and thus if what you are paying for IS in fact worth the price.

Not exactly. They are more pictures of the setting than any really helpful pictures of the stone.

Your pics need to be looking straight down at the stone to see the actual main centre diamond clearly otherwise the stone looks like it has a modern cushion pattern in the centre looking side on and it has a lot of crushed ice going on around the side edges your pics up the top also support this. If this is the case the setting could be a modern repo.

This is the only way to be able to tell more about the cut pattern and cut quality of the diamond.

I will try to do that when I go back to the jeweler. Thank you for your posts. This ring seems so different than any I've seen so far on PS. Do most people not like vintage rings? Is there a problem with them I'm unaware of?

While I can't comment on a piece from another vendor, what I can say is that buying an uncerted stone, while not uncommon with vintage rings, makes it very difficult to asses fair price. My suggestion, if you decide to proceed with the purchase, is to make it contingent upon an independent appraisal that you pay for. Will the seller give you a return period to buy the ring, have it appraised, then return it if you find it's not accurately represented?

Without an appraisal to confirm specs, there's no way to know if the price is fair. There's a huge swing in price when you move just one color grade up or down.

I can say that I love the elongated shape of the cushion - very unusual to see that in an old cut!

He says if it doesn't appraise, I can exchange. Of course, it not appraising is of concern to me, as I guess it is for most people (right?), but the more I look around the more I love this. Sigh!

Agreed. I wouldn't want to exchange if it didn't come back accurate. I wouldn't trust their business after.
