Hoping you all might be able to tell me what cut of diamond this is? I was under the impression that is might be a old or european cut- due to the large culet, small table and large crown. However, the diamond itself does not seem that deep. The setting is soviet era russian and I''m interested to find out more about the diamond.

Any insight you could provide would be much appreciated!

It looks like it may be an Old Miner's Cut to me.

Thanks Alison.

I was under the impression that old miner''s cuts were cushion shaped? What attributes make you think that this closer to a miners cut? Thanks so much!

Old European cut. It does look circular in outline and not cushion. A little out of roundness is possible for an OEC. It could be a thin stone of less than 57% depth. Check out its measurements. Thinner stones do not generally return light as well as more deeply cut stones.

OEC, it looks pretty round to me. Probably an older one, since it does have some faceting that looks like an OMC kinda.

It is not that unusual to find shallow, even extremely shallow, OECs/OMCs. The depth varied pretty wildly and it is definitely not true that they're all deep.

Because it''s quite out of round.

The last two stones I''ve seen that looked like this were marked as OMCs (which surprised me, because I thought they were OECs). Perhaps they were just mismarked.

I''d certainly defer to Dave on this; there are few as knowledgeable as Dave on old cuts.

Thanks so much for all the feedback!

My fiance and I had originally bought the ring mostly for the vintage setting- which I love- and with the intentions of replacing the diamond.

But, the more I look at the ring, the more I am liking the uniqueness of the stone. I really love the fire it produces, the chunky facets and the history of it. And as I''m not one much for jewelry anyhow, I''ve been thinking about just leaving good enough alone and enjoy the ring and the diamond as a quirky, unique, vintage piece.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again all!

hmm... a case of if you don''t have anything nice to say?

thanks for all the help anyhow. :)

It''s a nice little piece of history, I''d say keep it as-is.

Might be worth having a professional check out the diamond and see if there''s any issues with chips/thin girdle, etc.

Sorry, plum--I thought I''d answered!

I love your ring just as it is. I would keep that lovely diamond in that lovely setting.

Sounds good. The allure of the old style of cutting is often in the the piece it looks under older light sources, like gas lamps, candlelight etc. Also, Pricescopers love photos, so a few more (including a side view of that setting you like) couldn't hurt in getting feedback.

Other than accent stones they only round cut diamonds I like are ones like this. Just something about the cut and the flashes they produce are absolutely beautiful to me! I''d be tempted to reset the stone in something else to show off the stone as much as possible and then reset the ring with something else. However hte last time I aquired a vintage piece my local jeweler convinced me to keep it as it is so I did. I just love pieces like that :)

MustangGal- you bring up a great idea. i had noticed a small chip (?) in the side gridle on the stone. i hoe it''s not a problem.

junebug- thanks so much! i''m new here, what is SMTR?

jean, i''m glad you like it

i feel in love with the setting first- i''m not sure what else i would put in it though (besides another diamond). what about this setting doesn''t do the stone justice and what kind of setting would be best for this type of stone? thanks in advance! -jess

I see you were posting pics as I was replying. I do very much love that stone!!!! Like I said I would be tempted to reset it into maybe a pendant to show off, but last time I talked about doing that with ring I acquired, the jeweler convinced me to get all the filigree repairs and stone replacements done. It had 2 sapphire side stones that have fallen out (it actually was my great-great aunt''s engagement ring). I am not totally done restoring the ring, but I still love the look of these stones.

I was considering putting in my son''s birthstone or my husband''s (citrine and sapphire respectively) for the main stone and then diamond for the sides, but now I am just leaving the diamond and maybe will put in yellow sapphires on the side (to mix the idea of both birthstones).

What kind of stones do you like? I might consider a golden-orangy stone if you want to show off the setting more (like yellow sapphire, citrine, yellow topaz etc) or any blue or purple type of stone would look great. I am partial to the color of most tanzanites as well. Maybe even a green amethyst too would look nice.

Again I love color, but I wouldn''t mind leaving that ring as it is as well. No matter what I think you have a beautiful find there!

jean, your ring sounds lovely! i love the color of blue sapphires.

i think for the time being, i will leave the ring as is and probably take it to be checked out for any problems as suggested.

thanks again everyone! your feedback was much appreciated!
