Yay for a Freke thread! I just caught up on it, but I agree--let''s hear more!

What''s your favorite movie?

Ok. I''m going to have to come back to this after class.

LP Fave movie: American Beauty
I heart Kevin Spacey!!!

Anna I couldn''t stop laughing there for a minute. Oh it made me so mad I mean that''s hardly over $2 an hour. I should have sent her a bill afterwards for my labor.

MonkeyPie This is why I cook-so I can eat everything BEFORE it gets pretty! Hehehehehe...

Ok. Homework time!

I''m so sorry about your mom. Your parents are lucky to have you. It is easy to hear how much you love them.

I have to say, I can totally relate to your love of high heels. When you said you liked working for your Dad''s company because you can wear heels cracked me up. I always tell DH that I need to get a job so I can wear fab shoes! As it is, I am a SAHM that spends most days in heels!

You look like you are an outstanding baker! I wish you were in So CA...None of the bakeries have good cuppies!

Ok quick story that I remembered while I was finishing up my homework that''s due in an hour.

So going back to May 5th, 2006. Dale was supposed to pick me up at 7am so we could get an early start on the drive to Vegas. Plus we had to get there in time to check in to the hotel, get oriented, and find our way to the Hard Rock Hotel because the whole goal of the trip was to see a TOOL concert. We live in Albuquerque NM and it''s about an 8 hour drive up there.

Well, 7am rolled around. Then 8am. And I started to get worried-not really that something had happened to him but more that he''d been messing with me. I had told him I didn''t want to see anything pertaining to the trip-no receipts, no paperwork, nothing because I didn''t want to know what we were doing or how much any of it cost (good thing too! I would have kicked his booty!). But it worried me, because I didn''t know if he''d actually done anything! So I text him. Turns out that the rental car place he had reserved a car from didn''t have the economy compact he had requested. They made him sit there for an hour waiting to see if one would show up. Finally he got POed and went and complained to the manager about the time they were wasting and blah blah blah. So the manager gets it all together and finds out the cheapest car they have is a Chrysler 300M. More of a luxury car than anything else. But he gets it for the economy price-only also discounted because he was so irritated and the manager was so apologetic.

Here is an image of the car-only ours was white.

So he texts me back saying that we didn''t get the car we were supposed to, but that he was on his way and would be there soon. And he wouldn''t tell me what car he had gotten. So I was worried it would be a mini van or something weird. He pulls up almost an hour and a half late in this massive old man/wanna-be-Cadillac car and I''m in SHOCK. I wasn''t expecting that. Those 300Ms retail for anywhere from 17k not loaded at all to 31k totally loaded. And this one was towards the loaded side-leather seats and everything. So, you might be wondering why this detail about the car is important-heh. You''ll find out.

So the drive is pretty uneventful. We went from Albs to AZ, which was pretty hot already, and finally got to this town called Holbrook. Well, I use that term lightly-it was like the highway ran through a cluster of gas stations and fast food places. Now, WARNING, if you drive through Holbrook AZ, the speed limit changes from 65ish to 35 even though there aren''t any signs or stop lights or ANYTHING except gas stations and fast food to let you know that you''re in a town. Well. We didn''t notice that the speed limit changed. We hardly noticed that we weren''t in the middle of no where anymore. All of a sudden, flashing lights behind us. Dale pulls the car over into a gas station. Now keep in mind that at the time I was 24 and he was 23-and look very young for our ages. The cop gets out of his car, looks closely at it and comes to Dale''s side, asks him for license and registration, etc. Then he looks at me.

I''m practically pooing my pants because I don''t like cops. (No offense to anyone who is a cop or married to a cop or otherwise related to cops!) I''ve been pulled over about 7-8 times for various things (mostly speeding) and I always get ticketed for more than just one thing-and I get seriously anxious, because any interaction I''ve had with them has not ended well. So I won''t lie-I''m freaking out. And I''m sure I''m giving off those vibes.
38.gif

So he looks at me, then looks at Dale and then asks Dale to get out of the car. Then he makes Dale go to the back of the massive white car that looks way too expensive for two high school age kids (because that''s pretty much how old we looked-I had no makeup on and was wearing the equivalent of PJs, and Dale didn''t look much older.) So, he proceeds to talk to Dale for about 5 minutes. I can''t hear them, I''m just sitting there shaking and wondering what the hell we''re going to do.

The cop finally leaves Dale alone and then comes to my side and starts asking me questions like, "Where are you going? Why? Who is he? How do you know him? What is the status of your relationship? What does he do? What do you do? What concert are you going to go see? How old are you? What do you do? Where do you go to school?" Etc. Yeah. Not the right thing to do to make me feel any better. Finally he leaves me a sodden bordering on hysterical mess and goes back to Dale. I think this is about 15 minutes after he first pulled us over.

Dale has been chillin'' at the back of the car-he''s totally relaxed because with his work, he hangs out with cops and knows how to talk to them and is totally comfortable with them. Finally the guy writes some stuff down after a couple of trips to his squad car, hands Dale a piece of paper and lets him come back to the car. I''m still freaking out, and don''t calm down at all until the cop pulls away.

When I finally turn to Dale he''s laughing hysterically because he came to the conclusion that the cop thought that Dale had stolen the car, kidnapped me and was taking me somewhere to do who knows what to me, and thats why he was speeding. The more I thought about the questions he was asking me, the more I felt that Dale''s conclusion was right. Why the heck else would he ask about the status of our relationship?!

Anyway, a note to all: Do not speed in Holbrook, Arizona. Especially if you''re driving a big white fancy looking car, and look really young for your age and are terrified of cops.

And here is a pic of me without any makeup-wearing a hoodie-which is more how I normally look. Lately I''ve only been wearing glasses though, so that''s off too, but you get a better idea. I''m sorry it''s in B&W!!!

LOL, Freke--that story is awesome!

One of my sisters was out with her bf at the time at a sort of lookout point up in the mountains. Being teenagers, they were making out, but they were also both pretty straight edge, really good kids, so that was as far as it was going to go. A cop finds them there and starts grilling them--asks my sister if my parents know they''re up there, etc. (then asks her bf if my parents know they''re up there--I guess his parents didn''t matter?) Finally, he tells my sister that she should be grateful he showed up because "who knows what I would have found if I''d come up here in an hour!" My sister was like "the same thing?" She told my parents about it that night and they thought it was hilarious.

So what kind of music do you listen to? Tool, apparently.
3.gif
I''m a big fan of AEnima. Can you believe they''ve been together 18 years already? It''s enough to make you feel positively old! (Granted, bf is a few years older and loves NIN, and they''ve been around for 20 years, so I don''t feel quite so bad

LP Ok I love love love American Beauty. The story, the music, the acting, the videography of the film is just head and shoulders above everything else I''ve seen. It is the first (and pretty much only) movie I have gotten emotionally involved enough in to make me cry. Yup. Only movie to make me really cry. Like tears streaming down both cheeks cry. There are two other movies where my eyes have filled up-"The Bucket List" because it hits awfully close to home, and "The Lion King" which I LOVE.

Anyway, a big reason for my adoration of Kevin Spacey is from American Beauty- and it also stems from the fact that he''s a movie star-NOT a celebrity. He promotes his movies, goes to the premieres but you rarely ever see him on the cover of trashy celeb mags (which I adore as well!) or on stupid things like the "TMZ" show. Besides all of that-the man can act. And he''s picky about his roles-and he normally chooses the best ones. I haven''t seen anything he''s been in that he doesn''t like. And he''s not afraid to play roles that give a political statement (see "The Life of David Gale"). And that makes me happy.

Ooo...I could start listing all of my favorite actors and actresses, but I''ll refrain. I''ll pop in a little ''I love Judy Greer'' there though.
2.gif

Miranda Thanks for that. Sometimes it''s kind of hard to remember how much I love them when they are driving me nuts, but I''m so glad it comes out in the things I write.

Lol about the heels! Have you taken pics of them? I''d love to see some of your favorites!

Perhaps someday 2-3 years from now I''ll move down to S. Cal and I''ll open up a bakery. How awesome would that be?

LP Hi again! That story is awesome about your sister! And it''s so cool that she had such open communications lines with your parents. I had a tendency to keep pretty much everything from my parents when I was in high school. Part of that was because I had an almost 4 year relationship with a boy they didn''t like or trust, so things were pretty strained for a long time.

Dale is the Tool fan. I pretty much have to be to spend as much time with him as I do, because he has constant control over the music we listen to. He listens to NIN, Tool, TV on the Radio, A Perfect Circle, The Mars Volta, Postal Service and other lesser known intellectual rock bands. But Tool is far and away his favorite. So much so that he''s gotten into philosophical discussions with "me" (himself) about Tool fans-he claims that there are 2 types-the crazy metalhead rock fans and the intellectual types who dissect the lyrics and enjoy the orchestration of the musical instruments. Guess which type he falls into? I like to make fun of him for thinking so hard about it all.

As for Tool and NIN being so *old* compared to other bands I think it''s pretty awesome. I''ve been listening to them since I was about 11ish and still love their music as much now as I did then. And I think it''s amazing that a)they haven''t broken up and gotten back together a million times b)that their music has been able to grow and change with the times-which is truly admirable considering how much music has changed since they started and c) how they are still able to pick up new fans all of the time.

I listen to anything that has a beat, or basically anything but Country. My preferences lie with techno (which Dale says is just noise), rock and dance music, but my favorite artist is Moby. I''ve loved his music since I was 12-I heard it and was hooked. But I will literally listen to anything. I grew up listening to 50s (my mom) and classical (my dad) and have been exposed to just about everything in between. On my ipod right now would be mostly stuff I can dance to-Britney, Kanye, lesser known techno artists, Moby, The Mars Volta, Postal Service, Gnarls Barkley, Rihanna, NIN, Beethoven, Blue Man Group etc. I have always loved movie soundtracks because of the variety and exposing yourself to something new. And discovering those artists who aren''t well known yet. What''s funny is that I used to be a HUGE fan of Kottonmouth Kings-even though I wasn''t a pothead-I just liked the beats of their music. I often listen to songs that I like the music of and never really listen to the words-and then after hearing the song a few times I can remember the words.

This is the song that is currently one of my myspace profiles and will be played at our wedding. It''s "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" by Moby

And this is my favorite non-Moby song. which will not be played at our wedding.

LOL, that''s just like Kris--I''m the opposite. I''m such a lyrics person.

Blue Man Group is awesome, btw--have you seen them more than just the one time in Vegas?

Yeah actually! We saw them when the traveling show came to Albuquerque pretty soon after we got back from Vegas the second time. The Vegas show was amazing, but the traveling one wasn''t anything to sniff at either! I''ve seen Tool 3 times since D and I have been together-May and September in Vegas and then again when they came to Albs. Which is actually the best show I''ve seen of theirs-and according to D who has seen about 6 of their shows-thes best of all fo them. I would actually say it was the best concert I''ve ever been to, to be honest.

Sorry I kind of trailed off there-I didn''t realize what time it was, so I had to leave abruptly to go pick up D from work.

I was going to post another pic, but he needs to eat.

Freke, you are a very talented lady! I''m enjoying all your pics--you, your shoes, and your edible creations! Fun thread! I also wish your mom the best. Having had a parent stricken with cancer I can relate to your situation. Take care.

Oooh, a thread on my chica Freke!!
36.gif

Ok, so I HAVE to know what your death row meal would be. Appetizers, soup, salad, main course, dessert, beverage--gimme the whole nine!

Also, what''s your favourite recipe that you''ve concocted? Other than my Nutella Mess Cake, of course.
2.gif

Yeah! You got your own thread...i love your posts Freke! You have an interesting life indeed.

Unfortunately I''m trying to finish up my homework before class, but I''ll be back later!

I think you should open up a bakery here or where Miranda lives, I have not seen tres leches anywhere!!!! Prayers for your dear mom.

Thanks Monarch. I really appreciate it.

Gwen
Final Meal (Subject to mood changes! But these are all my favorite foods, so it probably wouldn''t change much...):

Appetizers:
Proscuitto wrapped Cantaloupe
Whole Wheat Sunflower Seed bread with Black Pepper Boursin and Herbed Goat Cheese
Fresh fruit and a good Wisconsin Cheddar

Soup:
Fresh made Cream of Mushroom-none of that canned stuff or maybe Cream of Asparagus (depends on what season it is-CoA for Spring/Summer and CoM for Fall/Winter)

Salad:
My aunt Judy''s corn salad (corn, black beans, green bell pepper, red onion, tomatoes, Zesty Italian dressing, and a whole lot of spices)
Or maybe Japanese Seaweed Salad

Main course:
Kraft Mac and Cheese
Rare Prime Rib
Baked Sweet Potato with butter and brown sugar

Dessert:
Creme Brulee and a piece of Gateau St. Honore (puff pastry/cream puffs dipped in hard caramel/pastry cream+whipped cream)

Beverage:
Green Apple Gatorade (I think they discontinued it though)
And a dirty Grey Goose Martini (if they''d allow it)

It''s a dang good thing I''m not lactose intolerant!

Um. Favorite recipe? Either my coffee Creme Brulee (baked)/coffee ice cream (the same recipe, only cooked on the stovetop) or Chai Cake-it was just like the flavor of the drink-only in cake form, and absolutely fantastic.

BTW, I got more butter and eggs so I might just make another version of the elusive Nutella cake tonight. Lol.

IwannaThanks! I don''t think it''s that interesting though, but I guess that everyone thinks that of their lives.

Skippy Thank you! I think I should to. When I get done with school, I''ll think about it, K? (I''m going to have to try one of those recipes sometime soon!!!)

Here is a pic I forgot I had of the turtles from over a year ago-they have reached about full size and haven''t grown much, if at all since then. They were sunning themselves out of the water here and giving me a dirty look for disturbing the peace. My mom loves to watch them.

Oh! I forgot to mention in the last long one about Dale and I that my mom was the one who suggested he move into the condo with me so that he could pay off his medical bills faster. She''s hardcore Catholic and pretty against living together-but it was HER IDEA. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Anyway. More tomorrow.

This thread is now officially making me really hungry!

Grilled Salmon and Asparagus

The salmon had Montreal Steak Seasoning on it, and the skin removed after grilling, and the asparagus was "shaved" because the stalks were really thick and I don''t like them like that and then it was blanched. Anyway, it was squirted with a whole lemon (each serving) of juice and added salt to taste.

It looks nicer on plates, but I can''t trust D to not spill the lemon juice all over so he gets it in my awesome Pottery Barn bowls.

Because I got the smaller piece of salmon, D also bought me some sea scallops, and those were just sauteed in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper, and then finished with cold butter. I have a pic of that too, but it''s just not as interesting.

Kraft Mac and Cheese (

I''m just getting lunch now (2:40 my time) because I had a 1:00 meeting--must go eat tasty food!

Also isn''t it funny how Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is simultaneously so gross and yet so tasty?

BTW, when you google "kraft mac & cheese", the seventh result is "things younger than McCain"--ha.

This made me crack up!!!! Chris does this ALLLL the time. About wrestling, bands, pretty much anything I don''t care about. LOL! I used to listen and ask questions, now I''m just like ''sweetie? Yeah, I don''t care.''
3.gif
They should meet up and discuss the life and times of metal. It sounds like it could last hours...

And mmmm kraft dinner is the best. Is it wrong that I love it more than homemade mac and cheese?
18.gif

Gwen! You should totally post the recipe, because the one I have would take about 2 hours of math to get it down to the serving size I could make in a home kitchen. I think the one I have is for 250 settings or something.
6.gif

As for the Chai cake, I made up the recipe, but because it was on my old computer, I lost it. Maybe that will be my next cake after I perfect the Nutella cake, the Isapahan, the Tres Leches and the Dulce de Tres Leches. Heck! I should just open a bakery now! I wouldn''t have been able to make the chai cake at home anyway, because the shortening to goes in it isn''t available for layman purchase. So I''d have to start from scratch anyway. (I remember it had black tea leaves, cinnamon sticks, fresh ginger and cardamom that was steeped in milk) I''ll get to it eventually!

LP I know I know I miss out on all of the funky gin drinks. Although I think Long Island Iced Tea has it in there, and that''s one of the things I''ll drink to get tipsy-so I guess I''m not really totally against it. My dad drinks Gin and Tonic during the summer. If it wasn''t for the dang juniper berries (I know it''s the secret ingredient!) I''d be on top of it. So what did you have for lunch?

And BTW-the kraft mac and cheese thing being younger than McCain is hilarious. Hee hee hee...

sunnyd Your guy watches wrestling too? Does he also watch mixed martial arts? Because that would be scary. Lol. They should meet up and talk about wrestling and rock. Holy cow, then we could go bling shopping!!

And no its not bad that you love it more than homemade-I do too! There is only one other mac and cheese I like more than Kraft, and it''s made at a local restaurant and has a billion and a half calories. But it is amazing. And it has Velveeta in it. Heh heh heh...

Here is one of my favorite pics...I used to carry my camera with me everywhere. Well at my CC, I was taking Sociology 101 and we were covering a chapter on deviance. I walked in one day to 3 guys who were gathering all of the chairs (we had tables and chairs in this room-no desks) and they put them in the back of the room stacked on top of each other. Our teacher came in and started laughing hysterically and was thrilled we had paid attention to what she had been talking about. Of course the next class the same three guy ordered a pizza to be delivered to our room in the middle of class. She was so excited that she even paid for the pizza. That was a really fun class because of the people. Otherwise it was pretty boring.

OMG, we have the same Pottery Barn plates/or whatever you want to call them!!

Do you have the "extending fork" from Restoration Hardware?
I sooooo want to send you one so you can pull that thing out one day and reach over a long table to "fork" the food on your man''s plate.

Personally, I think I make the best asparagus, but it would be fun to be up against a CIA grad!!

I am sorry to hear about your Mum.

If you ever need me, I am here.

Lol! BF bought those dishes for me for our first Christmas together -4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates and the 4 bowls(plus a sapphire necklace and a whole bunch of other stuff-he spoiled me rotten, really) and I was planning on registering for a full 8 piece or 10 piece set for our wedding, but I went to P Barn and they didn''t have them anymore. Do they still carry them? I love them dearly, although we only really use the bowls because the plates are ENORMOUS. The reason he bought them for me in the first place though is because he figured that if he bought them for me I''d make fancy dishes like on Iron Chef. HA HA HA!!! I fooled him!

I do not! I think I need one of those!

How do you make your asparagus?

Thank you miracles. I will not hesitate to call out to you if I need to. I really do appreciate it.

Here is a pic of my dog Judge. My dad named him that so that he could tell a Judge what to do for once (lawyers are weird). He''ll be 16 (I''m pretty sure) on September 21, 2008 and he''s a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. This picture makes me happy. We had just gotten a foot of snow in the city, and my parents had gotten 18 inches because they live at the base of the mountains. They couldn''t make it out of their driveway, so we drove out there and took them some food to last until the snow melted. He greeted us with a smile on his face-as you can see.

Oy. The pic would be nice.

That''s awesome....I like to tell judges what to do all the time, but it really isn''t that wise for future appearances. Oh, who am I fooling, I am well known for my unique approach to bureaucratic BS and I am the first one to say "Hey, the Emperor is wearing no clothes!! Seriously...the dude is nekkid as a jay bird!!

Oh yeah, I steam my asparagus to the p.e.r.f.e.c.t. texture. Not mussy...blech...and not too firm...equally blech. I sprinkle Lawry''s seasoned salt on them, and on occasion I spritz some 0 calorie spray "I can''t believe it''s not butter" onto them. A little pepper too. It''s divine. I do the same to my blanched fresh green beans. I am a fresh veggies junkie. But only know how to cook a few.

I have never had anyone not ask me how to do it, because even their young kids, I mean young as in 2 and 3 yr-olds love my fresh green beans. And for them, I don''t add anything at all. Just blanche them and microwave minimally to reheat. Hello my name is Miraclesrule and I am a fresh green bean junkie...perferably Trader Joes organic green beans when in season.

I can now eat salmon with the skin on it, so I am pretty proud about that since that is where all the Omega nutrients are found. It tastes like a good charred steak if it''s done right.
