I spoke with Josh at James Allen -- great guy. He gave me a lot of great tips and good advice.

I really like this stone as it meets all my requirements (Princess, 2ct+, Ideal Cut, I color or better, VS2 or better).

2.23 CT Ideal Cut Princess

Josh also suggested that I look at this SI2. A slightly less expensive stone, but he said it would be eye clean and where the inclusions are could cause him no concern. He felt the table and depth measurements were slightly better, and would thus reflect light better. I am hesitant to go into the SI range.

2.27 ct SI1

Please share any thoughts. I think I am ready to buy (and more importantly ask the big question).

BTW -- this would be the setting.

Setting (6 side diamond prong setting)

The SI1 looks like a better stone to me. The VS looks yellow and the cutting doesn''t stir anything in me.

huh -- you are right -- side by side the VS does look more yellow, but they are both I grade. Shouldn''t they be the same?

1. each color is a range. You can have low Is, which are close to J; solid, mid Is; and high Is, near H.

2. color grading is done with the face down. you are grading the color of the diamond crystal. cutting can make the diamond appear whiter from face up, or can make it appear to have more color. If you''re looking in the colorless and near-colorless color ranges, you don''t want your stone to look yellower than it is.

3. Photography environment may be different.

The 2.24 is a "rectangular modified brilliant," at a l/w ratio of 1.056.

Pics are more important than specs!

The conventional wisdom would be to drop to SI level and try to go for better color. But probably, at 2 cts and princess, you will have a little warmth even at H.

You can't judge colour by photos or on a computer monitor, your vendor is the best person to advise you on each individual diamond, especially in Princess cuts which may show more tint than a well cut round for example. There could be various reasons why the VS looks a bit warmer, but the only person to be able to tell you with any accuracy if this is the reality, is the vendor who can actually see the diamond.

What does "rectangular modified brilliant" mean?

At a l/w of 1.05 -- won't it appear square?

A princess is square!

A rectangular modified brilliant is a ...rectangle!

From the picture, I knew right away it was not less than 1.05

Thanks -- I edited my prior post. At a l/w of 1.05 -- won''t it just square?

Ok -- thanks -- I really appreciate this input and this help. For a diamond noob -- this information is golden.

Seems like the SI1 is still the best candidate.

I really like James Allen because of the help I got from their staff and they real pics of the diamonds.

Although, I am not particularly picky. I was just pointing it out.

2.14 looks ok, maybe a bit dark. Should have someone look at it.

Thanks again. I still love the symmetry of the reflected light in the 2.24 (rectangle one). It looks close to square to me -- until you point out that it is a bit more rectangular (and then that's all I focus on).

Here is a 2.1 ct H VS1 (slightly more expensive than they others) -- but it has no pic (emailed and requested one).

Post the pic when you get it, then you can discuss your options with Josh, he has an excellent reputation, and can advise you which is the best diamond for your purposes.

Thanks again!! I really appreciate the input. It helps a lot with the emotional side of this purchase (worrying about it -- did I get a good deal -- will it look nice ... etc.).

Last one -- how about this one?? -- found it through the pricescope search engine.

2.3 I VS2 perfect square

Here is the H VS1 picture that I requested. Color is great -- but that spec in the middle of the picture is not in the diamond is it? I would not be VS1 if that were the case right?

My VS1 'likely' missed VVS2 because my ONE TINY (impossible to spot even with a loupe) inclusion is under the table, and not over to the side. It's a VS1. You won't see it. Chances are... you won't even see it with a loupe unless you KNOW exactly where to look.

OK, you now have three options: 2.14, 2.30 I, and the H. They look like pretty good candidates to me. Table is a little big on the 2.30. Now is probably a good time to have them all looked at, and have a discussion.
