Millennials Replacing Engagement Rings With Diamonds Embedded In Their Fingers
March 14, 2018 at 7:23 pm
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – There’s a new trend in engagement rings.

Instead of a diamond ring around your finger, a diamond is embedded IN your finger, CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reported.

“We notice lately a lot of people coming looking for that,” Sam Abbas, who owns NYC Ink Studio in the West Village, told Hsu.

Apparently, some millennials are ditching the usual engagement ring and instead piercing their ring fingers.

“I think it looks nice, but if you really think what it’s doing to the body – and you can have scarring – it’s so many complications that can happen from it,” Cynthia Rivas said.

Abbas said there could be problems if the person doesn’t take care of the piercing, such as cleaning it two to three times a day and making sure the piercing artist has experience.

“You’re dealing with the blood, so you got to be very, very safe,” he said. “What we do, we sterilize everything.”

A piercing artist marks the spot with a pen, cleans with alcohol and iodine, uses a tool to remove a small patch of skin, and then inserts an anchor made of titanium or gold, which holds the gem, Hsu reported.

The whole process takes about 10 minutes and costs around $100 for the piercing. The diamond you choose is a separate cost.

As for the pain?

“You’re going to feel it. You’re getting pierced. It is a little bit painful. But people did it, and I have a lot of people who say, ‘Oh nice, it’s nothing, I expect more,” said Abbas.

Dermatologist Dr. Monica Halem told Hsu she has some concerns.

“First of all, these procedures are not being done by a doctor, and it is a surgical procedure,” she said. “There are a lot of important structures that sit right under the skin there that can easily be damaged, like tendons.”

There’s also the danger of the diamond snagging.

“That’s sitting right above the skin, that’s easily caught on something and can do a lot of damage,” said Halem.

She said you should think carefully before going for the new trend.

Healing from this kind of piercing can take up to 20 weeks. If you want the diamond removed, that’s possible but more painful than the initial piercing.

Dermal implants are not new, just gross. I love how "millennial" is used as click bait so often.

Aww I was just making light of it with the title I chose. You know I love (and hate) each individual based on their merits and nothing to do with the generation they were born into...

And haha I am with you on anything implants. If it optional no thank you.:knockout:

I meant the actual "article". They had to throw in "millennial" to get anyone to care. Looks like someone got assigned to do a millennial story and they just had to find something all the kids are doing nowadays!

as an early baby boomer I can tell you we were the topic of mucho discussions, doom, gloom, lazy etc etc stories.. I can say with great authority, dental implants don't always work (so far I'm 2 out of 5 that worked but then I am unique my physician says hahaha) I asked my sons about millenials as they are 87 and 91 kids, my older son totally echoed what you have said @Asscherhalo my younger son disavowed all that his brother said (of course their sibling rivalry is alive and kicking). We all see things thru our own lens.

Tekate do you mean dental or dermal? If you have 2/5 dermal implants i am impressed!! Lol

Dermals are definitely not permanent either. Plus I imagine one on a finger would leave quite a scar. No thanks.

My tastes change often so there's no way I could make a commitment for a tat or implant. The ring implant doesn't look comfortable, looks as though it would snag on everything. At least a ring can be taken off when doing activities that can damage either the jewel or the person. Aaaaand, what about upgrades?!

Not just for rings:

I like the picture @Matata posted but, for practical purposes, no thanks! No dermal implants for me.

I’m technically a millennial and there’s not a chance I’d do that.

Yup have to say I agree with you x.x Never ever ever. I'm too much of a pansy. Also that dog! Lol

I'm with NOPE...I dont like pain. Plus, I probably would never leave it alone. I would want to pick it off (:knockout:). My mind would be saying it doesnt belong
there...get it off...now!:eek-2:

I don't find them practical at all for the digits, BUT I have two "millenial" friends with dermal piercings on their torsos that I think are gorgeous. They look beautiful on young skin!

aw SB that is hysterical.. no tats or diamond implants for me either.. eventually all your skin sags, I know. :)

Yes I have dental implants - I have had 5 put in, and 2 worked, now each implant is about 3K, of which I have no dental insurance and when I did it only paid like 400.00$ for two of them (one failed).. so I would say that these implants in the skin could get infected. no thanks. (I will be getting another try at and implant ((3rd try by this doc))

That looks painful and not practical! I'd be whacking it into things and worried about damaging it (or me). Besides... I like changing sparklies sometimes!

To each their own!

Oh no way - I don't actively search for ways to inflict pain on myself. Just think of how grest it would feel to get the diamond caught in something. I don't like piercings anywhere but the ears. I went to be wedding this weekend and there was a woman at least 10 years my senior with a nose ring. I am hopelessly out of synch with what's cool today.

Can you imagine how clogged it would get?? You'd never be able to clean it! They'd be the dirtiest diamonds in the universe. I can only imagine with someone like @diamondseeker2006 - who gets jittery if she can't access the bottom of her diamonds to clean them - would make of this! And the germs....ewwwww!

Yes, even assuming you're going to wear rubber gloves, as you say, a snag-fest that would probably shred even a glove, but can you imagine the yuck factor of actually cooking or washing dishes with those things? Or trying to baste a turkey or rotate a sheet pan with your hands in and out of the heat of the oven? In that situation I've even had earrings get so hot I have to back off, I can only imagine how hot an implant on my HAND would get in oh, about 3 seconds.

And the snagging of your own clothes, snagging furniture, scratching furniture, yeesh. The impracticality of those is pretty staggering.

I must live in a different world than someone who would do that, because someone who would do that pretty obviously doesn't do much with their hands.

I have a dainty tattoo on my wrist, and I cried for hours, husband says it was 10 minutes max, but I beg to differ.
To each their own, but a dermal ring just seems so impractical.

That’s a big Nope for me. I was going to post this here @missy . I do believe we watch the same local newscast!? Lol

Soon they will have their stinking smell phones implanted, since they are addicted to them. I'm never owned one and never will. I pay for the internet once, and enjoy my computer. That's enough. Besides, range fees are priority.

Eeeeewww. Just imagine trying to clean that. Nope.

Those photos made my skin crawl!! Just yuck!! That can't be sanitary! And keeping the stone's clean would be impossible!

I remember when all the sub forums here, including LIW, BWW, Health and Family, etc were HOPPING. Younger people felt comfortable coming here. They didn’t feel belittled. They felt welcome to talk about trends in engagement jewelry, and changes as far as buying diamonds only from brick and mortars vs online.

Threads like this never cease to amaze me, the way they absolutely continue to discourage community growth.

This is why forums like Ps are getting left in the dust in favor of friendlier places to those of younger generations.

But please enjoy your reminiscing and disdain for literally anything having to do with younger folks. It’s no wonder kids want nothing to do with their parents once they hit a certain age. People are too busy living in the past and unwilling to deal with the changes now and those to inevitably come.

@OP and participants nothing personal. I see this everywhere now. Just makes me sad and I wanted to speak up.ETA: I feel like the ******* net nanny. I guess so be it. This one just got to me.

Ok I'm dying :lol-2:

I have a container full of stick on stones from the mid to late 80s. The adhesive is still good on them. It will give you the same look for less pain and less money and is way more versatile because you can change your stick on stones to match your outfits.

Just saying...

Btw I wasn't born yet when I got these stick on stones at the local flea market. I was born a decade after I purchased them...just so we're clear...

I’m in the definite nope club. Looks painful and impractical.

Many younger people have disdain for the "nuclear" family without any impetus from their parents. I lay the blame for this squarely on "social media." Steve Jobs said he wasn't inventing a product, but a lifestyle. He was right, and it's not for the better.

I've been very close to my kids always. OK they're in their 30's now, but cell phones are off in the house and after harping on them thru the years they don't say "like, awesome, trending, Facebook, and Twitter." They visit weekly and express understanding and appreciation for how they were brought up.
