I got into trouble this year checking out the antique/estate event in my town. Here is my second purchase. Both diamonds are OECs. The ring is 1.06 carats, in 18k gold. The diamonds are lovely, well matched in color, but not terribly well matched in terms of cut. I still love it.
The twinstone I picked up yesterday is cracked in two places on the shank. They will definitely take it back, they will exchange it, or they will fix it.
If they fix it they have to build it up over the filigree because it is so delicate. SO I would lose some filigree on the shank. This isn't a huge deal, but they did say because it was so delicate it is definitely at risk for happening again.
Eventually it really may not be fixable and at that point I'd have to reset.
I would only keep it if they can restore it to it's original condition. There are people who can do that more than likely, but it is a matter of whether they can. The setting makes that ring, so I would not keep it unless it can be satisfactorily fixed. I am sorry because it is a very pretty ring!
Oh no, sorry to hear that! My only concern is that you'll be unhappy with the appearance of the ring after they fix it - it's my understanding rehabbing these older settings takes some skill, and unfortunately I've seen some botched jobs here on PS. The fact that they're telling you some filigree will be lost is making me a little nervous. Any possibility of the option that they fix it, and then you can decide if you want to keep it?
I am. The diamonds are lovely, but not exactly amazing in their cuts. The setting is beautiful, but not necessarily exquisite. However together they just....do something for me.
Thanks for hanging out along this journey! My only bummer is I think even after the fix, if they did a great job and I was really happy with it (they gave me a preview and I think it will be okay) I would still be really nervous to wear it. Most of my rings are substantial, and while I'm careful with them, I don't baby them.
there are two cracks and one complete separation. All on one side of the ring, opposing sides of the shank (if that makes sense.) So all three right now are on the "right" side of the ring, two closest to my hand, one closest to my fingers.
