Thanks to surfgirl, I''ve fallen in love with OMC''s and OEC''s
so can someone please give me feedback on this diamond. Looks very pretty...
Seller is close to me so i''m in the process of meeting with them to view the diamond in person

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=009&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=190125039139&rd=1&rd=1

Color is L and this is what seller had to say..

Face up, the stone is as white as white can be. From the side, you will detect a little body color under certain lighting conditions only and only from this angle. I bought this ring at an estate sale and would like to keep it but sadly need the cash for now. It is extremely sparkly and looks absolutely fabulous when worn as the stone really sparkles like mad - that is no exaggeration (broad flashes of colors). If you give me your email address, I can make you a short movie clip of the ring.

please comment!. Thanks

MB, thanks for crediting me for your new addiction! I''d be very wary to buy anything like this on ebay no matter how tempting unless she will allow you to return it after appraisal. Speaking of which, in the last photo it seems like I can see a couple of inclusions. I dont think there is a mention of an cert, is there? I''d be wary. Maybe she''ll agree to have to appraised for you?

I don''t know a single thing about OECs...but I just want to say that the diamond is beautiful.

I also chuckled a little bit where it says she will not ship overseas, (except canada).

If you are meeting her to see the ring, why don''t you arrange to meet at an indepenent appraiser. Have it done at the same time.

I love the chunky facets....

Be careful with color grading an OMC/OEC diamond in the mounting. Many times I''ve seen folks get fooled.
Sometimes the actual color is 2-3 grades darker than it appears.
It would be in your best interest to set up a meeting with the seller and an independent gemologist/appraiser in your area before commiting.
I personally am a big fan of Old Euro''s.

www.metrojewelryappraisers.com

MB, I didn''t realize that you''re meeting the seller in person to view the ring. In that case I agree, just ask her to meet you at the appraiser''s of your choice and get the ring appraised..but make sure to ask for a good appraiser reference here in LA, someone who''s not going to jack up the appraisal value "just because"...Good luck! The setting is very nice and unique.

Well, there is one spot on the diamond, and it''s pretty big, that shows up VERY dark in many of the pictures. Looks odd to me, even if it''s not an inclusion per se. I also think I am seeing another inclusion spot in one of the bottom pictures, but I''m not sure.

Also, the diamond is quite yellow in those side pictures.

But as long as you see it in person AND get it INDEPENDENTLY appraised before purchase, why not?

You caught that too?!

Nothing to add, you''ve already gotten professional advice!

MommaBear, it says in the listing she''s willing to send it to an appraiser. I would suggest you meet her at an appraiser of YOUR CHOICE who is Pricescope recommended. (Just in case she has some appraiser friend who will say the ring is better than it is.) That way you can see it yourself, and have the appraiser give you his report.

It looks gorgeous to me from the photographs. I think it''s definitely worth looking into!

Hi girls,
well upon thinking about it while shopping (shopping is my therapy :)
i think L is too yellow for me. I LOVE THE CUT though...
I''m so excited .. i just don''t know where to look for an OEC/OMC around here.
Surfgirl? any thoughts.
I can''t stop thinking about your diamond. I just love, love it!

Thanks for all your replies :)

MB, what part of the country are you in? I know old stone dealers here and there to recommend depending on if you''re near NYC, Houston, SF, LA or San Diego...any of those places near enough for you to drive to?

If you are looking for OECs/OMCs and you''re in the LA area, I suggest Nobel Gems on 4th street in Santa Monica.

RZ

hey surfgirl,
I live in So. California so La, and San Diego are within my driving distance.
But I would make an exception and drive a little further for a Beauty.
Thanks for any input.

Hi MB,

I agree with everyone''s advice and here is my 2 cents:

I took my OMC to Ari @ Single Stone last week and while discussing color (my OMC is also an L) he told me NOT to over-analyze color in an old cut because for as long as it faces up white, I should be OK.

However, if you are color-sensitive, an L might not be the stone for you.

It may be worth investigating, who knows?

Well then:

1. Single Stone (LA)
ask for Ari
607 South Hill Street, Suite 204
Los Angeles, CA 90014
Tel: 213. 892.0772
NOTE: They're by appointment only, downtown but they also have another shop in San Marino near Pasadena.
I want to say that Ari is very good about not making a stone a better color grade than it is. Most of what I saw when I was there was in the J-M range and he doesn't pretend they're whiter than they are. Having said that, he has alot of stuff to see and he's got good lighting and huge floor-to-ceiling windows with great natural light so you can really see what the stones look like. Tons of set rings as well as settings. His shop is like stepping into a little jewel box. It's just the sort of place you could spend the day milling about in.

2. 23rd Street Jewelers (Santa Monica)
2319 Wilshire Boulevard
Santa Monica, CA 90403
phone: 310.828.0833
I dont know if they carry old cuts but they do amazing custom work with a lot of antiquey details so they'd be worth calling.

3. H. Moradi Estate Jewelers (La Jolla)
1237 Prospect St
La Jolla, CA
858-459-1716 *Ask to speak to Pauline or Hossein.
I got my ring here. Lovely people. If you come down do let me know and I could meet you there! Better to phone them first (before making that drive) to see what they've got in stock in terms of old cuts, if any. Mine was not a common find there.

4. The Collection: Time and Treasure
858-454-2323 *Ask to speak with Catherine or Brent.
Where I got my wedding band. They have amazing stuff too, and the owner's father deals specifically in old stones. NOTE that they are moving shops and will close their current shop in La Jolla end of this month so if you want to view any loose stones, I'd call them this week to see if that will be possible, or if you'll have to wait until they re-open at their new location in La Jolla in September. If you're a serious buyer, she'll call in stones that meet your criteria but I wouldn't ask them to do that unless you're really buying.

I dont know anything about Noble Gems but if Rockzilla recommends it, it's not far from 23rd St. Jewelers.

And if you're really serious and want to make a trip:

5. Ask the owners of The Collection for their father's contact in SF. Or better yet, Widget can give it to you, she's bought from him (her sapphire I believe!).

6. Michael Goldstein (NYC)
http://www.antiquediamond.com
I believe he supplies people here in SoCal when they need loose stones so you could go right to the source if you're going to be in the NY area at all. Just call ahead and give him a couple weeks lead time to bring in what you're interested in.

Let me know what you see in LA, I'm curious! Is this going to be for an ering upgrade, or an initial ering? Have fun...

Hmmm... I think it''s a perfect opportunity to see if an L OEC is too yellow for you. What an opportunity -- not to often one goes up for sell in your backyard! You could meet at one of those jewelry stores first (like Single Stone) to see if it''s worth the time to see an appraiser. I think it''s a beauty if you haven''t noticed!

LOL

I''m in So Ca too and so wishing I was in the market for an OEC!

Oh my goodness surfgirl.
That''s quite a list and thank you so much! It will be handy since i''m out of work for the summer and have nothing better to do.
I''m searching for a loose stone. If it becomes difficult to find a really nice, loose stone,
I will purchase one in a setting and take it out to place in my Ering. Right now, I have a CZ in my setting. It''s for an initial Ering
It''s very sad and I''m very ashamed
emsad.gif
it''s been difficult for me to find a stone. At first i was searching for
a RB but i couldn''t get the image of your stone out of my mind! So I''m going to see if I can find one for me.

Nobel gems has a lot of OECs in settings...there may have been a few loose but I recall there were probably ~30 OEC rings of different sizes. It is a small shop, not fancy at all, but he carries about 50% antiques and 50% repros/modern stuff he does himself.

The owner (I think his name is Ken) will generally be really happy to sit and talk with you about the different stones, etc without giving you a hard sell. Definitely worth a look if you're already in Santa Monica.

I haven't purchased an OEC from him (out of my budget at the moment) but he did make the setting for my sapphire ring.

Also, I would recommend looking at auctions...bonhams in LA recently sold a 1.3ct OMC (J/K SI) in a beautiful setting (I wanted this ring so badly!)...with the buyers premium it went for just under $5k. You of course have to see it in person at one of their preview days...but once you've decided you want to bid on it you can go either absentee, internet or phone for the bidding.

Sounds like you have a lot of shopping to do missy! Get to it
31.gif
! As for your ring, can you share a photo of the setting so we can see what it looks like. I ask because its possible you might find a really lovely ring, already set, and use that as your ering? Is that a possibility?

ETA:

MB, you need to go to this thread and figure out how to meet this person, perhaps at Single Stone? I feel like a match maker!

that link doesn''t work.. boohoo.
I''ve attached a photo of my setting. since this setting has already been purchased and paid for,
it''s mine. i don''t know what i would do with it. I suppose if i find a ring already set and i really like the stone, i could have 2 ERINGs!!
and i could just get a RB for this setting i already have. hehehe... i''ll have to work on my sweety with that one.

rockzilla,
thank you for the info on Noble Gems. I''m definitely going to look into them.
As far as auctions, i''m not familiar with that route at all.
Bonhams? are they on the net? i''m sure they are, who isn''t... i''ll have to run a search.
THANK YOU!

Oh, now that I see your setting I see why you'd be interested in an old cut stone. I can totally see an old cut in that setting. It looks a bit Edwardian almost. Lovely!

Oh, and I think you should meet that Ebay person and see that stone in person at an appraisers. At least it will give you a clear idea of how color sensitive you are with the old cuts. I find they face up a lot whiter than the new RBs so you might be surprised! For me, I NEVER thought I'd go with an I color stone but my I faces up very white in most lighting situations so I decided I didn't mind it as much. But I saw an I new RB and it was way too yellow for my tastes. Go check out that stone! BTW, what size stone will your ering setting take?

That link was to a thread that seems to be taken down now. The poster mentioned selling her diamond, and selling on PS isn't allowed so it was probably removed. Just call Ari at Single Stone and ask him about what he's got. If you give him a week or so he can bring in a lot of stones for you to see, in addition to what's currently in his shop. He apparently has a lot of stones out circulating to other shops so once you tell him your parameters, he can call in stones to meet your needs. Also, IIRC, he's ammenable to taking out a stone from a setting, especially if it's a vintage setting but the stone is not original to that setting. So it's worth looking at his loose stones as well as already set. Ooh, I wish I could meet you there...I just LOVE his shop! Enjoy the process!

I love my setting and I've seen a lot of other ring settings out there that are very nice. I like the antique look but didn't want it to be too ornate.
this setting that we purchased was perfect. very delicate but gave off an old world look.
I'm working on seeing the L diamond in person. The diamond is in la crescenta so hopefully she (i'm assuming) will
meet me at the san marino shop. i just talked to the san marino shop and the owner who would tell me if they will appraise it, won't be in till 11. argh.
i wonder if anyone will bid on the stone... hmmph

oh, my setting will take a 1.5 to a 2 ct. diamond. so i think the 2.08 L is pushing it.... still gotta see it though.

I think i did read the thread about her stone that was in a bar style pin right?
that's funny cuz when i read it, i was thinking, hey, you can have polished down, i won't mind.. it'll still fit in my setting

MB, can you re post your latest post? It''s all jumbled on my screen and I cant read it...

Hope this works...

MB, I believe Ari''s wife runs the San Marino store. I''ve not been there but I''m sure it''s just as lovely as the downtown store. Are they able to appraise it?

Sorry if I''m not reading the whole thread and am missing the point, but if you''re worrying about a 2.08 OEC fitting into a setting that takes a 1.5-2.0 carat modern round, remember that old cuts often face up smaller than modern stones. If the old cut isn''t round, I''d want my jeweler to verify that the setting works with the shape and with a potentially deeper pavilion.

SG,
I spoke to Corina at the San Marino store. She''ll be happy to appraise it however, because the stone is in a setting and not loose,
the appraisal will only be a ball park... hard to get a color. I have to call her back in 15 min. i sent her some of the photos, I need to make
an appt. with her and with Ebayer.

Elmo,
I am taking the setting that i have with me to make sure it will fit.
The stone is a round oec.
Thanks for the info.

Cool! Is Corina Ari''s wife? Anyway, I cant wait to hear what you think of the stone in person. Be aware though that you''re having the stone appraised in a store that SELLS old cuts...just keep that in mind. Ultimately, I feel the old cuts are a matter of "do you LOVE it in person?!?" Nevermind the stats. But that''s just my opinion. I cant wait to hear what you think.

Elmo has a good point about old cuts sometimes having a smaller spread because they''re cut deeper. I looked up modern RBs on the PS stone locator, looked up stones with the exact stats as my stone, just to see what the dimension measurements are. My transitional cut is basically the same dimensions as a new RB so the spread on my finger is that of a RB. So if the Ebay seller has the dimensions, get them and compare on the PS locator. That will give you an idea of how big on the hand it might look.
