Hello, everyone! :wavey: First, let me just say that PS is sometimes the best part of my day. It's uplifting to see so much generosity and patience manifested with each other so often.

I wonder if I could ask for your insight into two stones I'm considering? They both look quite good to me but I would sincerely appreciate any feedback. I like the high color, clarity (eye clean within 6") and size on both. The smaller stone looks like a better cut (to my amateur eyes), but the larger is closer to the size I'd really like (7mm) if budget were not an issue. As it is, I've decided to use 1/4 of the funds for the ring and the remainder for my new business. So I'm working with a 3k cap, including the setting. I've got that part figured out at least: a Boone tension setting which will come to $600.

I've done quite a bit of searching on JBEG, OWD and some other vendors but am not confident in my Ebay skills. I have looked at ideal cut MRBs but with my budget and preferences, I can go as far as a .7 I SI1 ACA / ideal cut, about 5.7mm spread. In the end I do prefer an older cut, especially if I can see it from all sides in a modern, simple setting. I'd also rather stay at or above .75 ct.

So here are the candidates, neither of which I'm likely to see in person due to restocking fees.

A) 1 ct, I SI1
Per the vendor: No inclusions under a 30x loupe. Outside bezel measures 7.27mm, inside the bezel it measures 6.42. He guesses it's a 7mm spread but I'm confused about this. Does it mean this 1ct is really shallow and won't reflect light optimally? Appraised by a GIA gemologist although there is no report.

B) FG VS1
.75 ct, F/G VS1 transitional. Measures 5.58 mm. The vendor states any black spots are camera reflections. Do you think the table is too big on this stone or is it more in line with a transitional?

I'm mainly concerned with the cut and light return on these. What do you think?

Bump....any thoughts on either stone? Any feedback is welcome.

Are these ebay stones? No lab reports?

Most old cuts cannot be set into a tensions style mount. The girdles are often knife edge. The stones are off round. Its not a mount I would use with an old cut.

Thanks, Dreamer. There are no lab reports and these are RL stones. Not the best way to evaluate, that's why I was hoping someone could chime in based on the few photos I have. Do they look like nice stones?

I remember Audball set her OEC in a Scholdt semi bezel. Once a stone is unset and the girdle is indeed too thin, is it possible to thicken them without changing the light performance? Is that even possible?

I'm keen on these two because of the price: around 2,500 each but that includes their settings. Should I keep looking?

Tension settings are not the same as semi bezels. Tension settings apply a lot of pressure to the girdle. Semi bezels have seats where the diamond sits, and the semi bezels are pushed down around it.

There's always a risk when a diamond goes under the wheel, and you should consider the additional cutting cost if you decide to go that route.

Has the 1ct been weighed? If not, how do they know it weighs 1ct? If it is 1ct and close to 7mm, I think it might be a little too shallow. You'll see performance issues.

The .75 looks like it has nice pattern, but hard to say without a picture of it facing the camera directly. I'd probably take the F-G grade with a grain of salt, as most ebay and RL old cuts without GIA reports end up being more tinted than the description. If you want to know if the price is in line, I do remember seeing a GIA graded .75ct F VS2 with transitional pattern for $2850 on ebay a few months back, and it sat around for a long time. Given that this diamond has no GIA report, I probably wouldn't consider it a steal at $2500.

Thank you Dreamer, Phale and Fortekitty for your assessments. Sounds like they're not worth the risk or the price tag.

Back to the drawing board!

I'm not an expert. All I can say is that those prices are not good. I've found better deals on eBay. Keep looking until you find something amazing. Good luck!
