Poor Obama-I hope his grandmother can pull through. It sounds like she''s close to death, though. His grandmother helped raise him with his mom and grandfather. I think I feel extra bad for him because my fiance''s grandmother helped raise him and he was devastated when she died.

I hope she hangs in there long enough to see her grandson become president!

I hope he makes it in time ... of course, ideally she''d make it to see him become President. So sad. I know he''s spoken of his mother''s final days ... and how additionally difficult they were due to insurance red tape.

SO''s grandmother was waning, and he took a flight out to see her before she passed. His flight was cancelled overnight, and he missed her by a few hours. It was really, really hard on him. Praying for the Obama family!

That''s another thing I was thinking about...so sad.

I didn''t see that...I live in Madison and was really sad that his event was cancelled here. But now I completely understand and I commend him for knowing that family should come before politics...

Sorry to hear that.

I just read over this weekend that if Obama does indeed the election and become president, that he will be the first sitting president *ever* to have a living grandparent.

I hope she pulls through the current health crisis. It''s kind of sad when you realize that Barack Obama became an orphan at the uncommonly young age of 34... I''m sure his grandmother means all the more to him on a personal level because of it.

If my parents aren''t around when I am 34, I''ll kill them! (I kid!) My dad''s birthday is on Wednesday, and he will be 57!

And no worries, because I forbade my parents from dying YEARS ago!

Well, a warning here: parents are about as disobedient as kids, I''ve found. Don''t be surprised if at some point, they die in spite of promises, just to spite you.

Until I read your comments, lovely Pricesopers, I hadn't really put myself in Mr. Obama's shoes. Of course I knew his grandmother from pictures and knew she meant a great deal to him. I would have loved to have her live to see him become president if he were to win the election. But I didn't really empathize. Your kind comments gave me pause. (We really have an exceptional community here.) It made me remember that my daughter tried to kill herself when the doctor suggested that the IV for my mother be shut off in May and she began to die, at age 90. My mother and father had helped to raise my daughter. Now of course we hope that the future president of the United States is made of sterner stuff than a 15 year-old girl, but the basic feelings of love and loss are the same. You recognized them and I, although I just saw them in action so recently, did not. It makes the argument for humility. One should keep his ears open. I forget the saying (I am sure one of you can supply it), but there is one. It is something to the effect that a man should listen twice as much as he speaks. I am listening to you. Thank you for your wisdom.

So sorry to hear this, positive wishes going out to the entire family.

"The New York Times" said that this photo was taken at Barack Obama''s (then Barry''s) 1979 high school graduation. He is pictured with his maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who with his grandfather, Stanley Dunham, raised him while his mother was in Indonesia.

Oh but even this doesn''t get a pass from the far right hate-machine. Read it and WEEP. Especially the comment section. If that doesn''t give you pause about the "fine" citizens of this country, nothing will.

Positively Sickening.

OMG Deco. Everything on there is awful.

Quite frankly I would question the judgement of anyone who DIDN'T leave the campaign trail for a few days to say goodbye to the woman that raised him/her!!!

Those people are just sick.

I''m sorry to hear about Obama''s grandmother.

But, if she''s so gravely ill and he''s so worried, why wait 3 days? I for one would want to be with my loved one right away and nothing would stop me.

I thought the same thing. But look what she DID live long enough to see. I could leave this world peacefully knowing I had contributed to creating someone as fine as she did.

Have you ever known someone with a terminal illness? Death is a process. The stages are usually predictable. If the situation was an "emergency" -- I''m sure he''d go as fast as possible. The woman is at home, to presumably die peacefully. With the help of hospice care. Happens all the time all over America. And it happened to my own beloved Grandma.

Why have the automatic, mean-spirited presumption that he isn''t proceeding lovingly & reasonably?
He gets attacked either way: leaving the trail at all ... leaving too slowly.

My heart aches for America sometimes.

I''ve read reports that she broke her hip. Elderly women often die shortly after breaking their hips. My grandmother died a couple of months afterward.

I just want to say that I think it is entirely inappropriate to be speculating about whether Obama'' grandmother is really gravely ill or not. I would feel the same way regardless of the candidate.

Thank you for saying this. People can''t even be nice during a time like this. Geez.

I was not questioning the grandmothers sickness. I was just stating that if she is "gravely ill", I personally wouldn''t wait for 3 days. I would go right away. I was questioning why Obama was waiting so long.

So, then you are saying that your comment was not at all directed to "the real reason that Obama went to Hawaii" and that you were merely speculating that you wonder what was taking him so long?

Why are you questioning him at all? What are you implying?

Because based on the links you''ve posted in other threads, I''m sure you''ve got a ridiculously far-fetched and offensive conspiracy theory link for us!
