NYC Diamond District - Streets Really Lined with Gold (and Diamonds)?

The recent thread started by someone who thought he found a giant diamond reminded me of these videos. (Sorry if they've already been posted).

I wonder how often these "urban prospectors" do their "digging" on 47th St. (?)

I don't think I could stomach this hobby (could you??) but I do admire their entrepreneurial spirit!

I've seen these guys...many times......One time one of our runners dropped a ring down the elevator shaft. So I threw him down after it.....NOT!!!!

Do they really make much money on this? If I try to sell jewelry they offer pennies. Once I was told the small diamonds were worthless and the 14 kt gold was worth $25 on a pair of hoop earrings.

That's a really good question....but the fact I've seen numerous people doing this....makes it seem like there must be some value in what they're spending time on....then again, people are so dumb sometimes
