I hope this is the right forum, but wanted to see if I was getting an okay deal from someone I believe is trustworthy. It's a round cut. Here are the specs that I have so far:

Cert. type: IGI

Measurement: 7.17 x 7.21 x 4.58

Ct. 1.5

Color: Good

Clarity: SI2

Pol. VG

Sym. VG

Price: $ 8775

I'm looking for a decent sized diamond of good quality. Round shape. Budget $10,000.

Thanks for any help. Are there some more precise questions that I should ask related to this diamond? Is IGI reputable?

Hi there and welcome!!

Are you sure it says, color: Good ?

I am not a fan of IGI

I think you could do a lot better like with this:

1.51 J SI1

ETA: The cut is going to be far superior, and also, look at the difference in diameter... the IGI is far too deep/poorly cut. The diameter on the stone I posted is 7.38-7.42. That is a lot bigger looking than 7.17

You can do a search on here about IGI. Not a fan of them either. The cert says color Good??

Sorry, it actually says the color is: G. My mistake. This is how novice I am. Just don''t want to get taken.

I don''t like IGI either. Go look at what Pinkflamingo provided. That''s probably a much better diamond.

I also do not like IGI. This is because their grading is not that accurate. They could be off a grade or 2 in terms of clarity or color. I would stick with a GIA or AGS graded diamond. And before you make any decisions please educate yourself with the tutorials found above under Knowledge. Buying a diamond is a very big decision. You should know as much as you can before purchasing one. Please realize that the cut of the diamond is the most important of the 4C's. You must find a well cut diamond to get the sparkle and shine that people associate with diamonds. Please tell us what you are looking for in terms of budget and diamond qualities. Many here can suggest some very beautiful diamonds to you.

DITTO.

The pricescope community is very kind. Since you have not bought the stone, I can afford to be direct.

This is a good example of why to avoid certain "trustworthy" B&M vendors and stay away from deep cut stones, with their IGI paper. Did he tell you the depth was 63.7% and this would compromise light performance and diameter (spread)?

As Jasmine said, if you educate yourself, with all of the resources on the net, you can make a well informed decision. Even get free advise, like you have done, before making a purchase.

Please let us know that you did not buy that stone. The recommendation from Pick Flamingo is far superior. Cinderella was being polite when she said it was "probably" much better.

Sincerely,
David

Thank you! I haven''t bought the stone yet. From educating myself, I see what a good stone is, I just don''t know their worth. Am I paying a fair price for a good stone or paying too much for a poor one? That''s my big issue. How trustworthy is buying a stone online? How hard is it to return if it doesn''t amount to what you paid for it? Thanks!

Hi,
I would encourage you to buy online. It is a much more deliberate process, you can avoid undesirable sales pressure, and usually save money based on lower markups. Once you become a savy shopper, there are so many tools and other information you can use online to assist you in making a wise purchase. IMO, you have a BIG budget, so be careful.

I would say that the vendors that particpate in this community are trustworthy.

You can spend countless hours and become a cut geek like some of us. Or you could seek the advise of those of us on Pricescope and one of these trusted vendors to assit you with your purchase.

All PS vendors have a return policy, check the number of days. If you are careful with your purchase it would be unlikely that you would need to make a return.

pinkflamingo suggested a super-ideal cut stone. It should be eyeclean, and although it is a J color, it will face up quite white. The light performance is excellent! This is a "branded" stone from a top vendor, but the price will reflect all these features. If you call the vendor, I am sure that they will take good care of you.

Or you can learn about ratios, PAand CA combos, HCAs, etc.. and try to buy something on your own using a virtual search, all available on this site.

Before you spend the money, share with us what you are considering (just like you did) and we can make help ensure that you are getting a fair deal.

Best Wishes,
David

How many of you have seen miss graded IGI diamonds?

The price is fair for a B&M store.

The depth of this stone indicates that it probably has a thick girdle - and there fore a smaller spread - but you do not know the light performance is suffering.

As a G color and sI2 clarity it is pretty easy for even an uneducated consumer to look at it and see if it is drawing color, or has eye visible inclusions.

And please someone show me the J diamond that does not look like a J from any direction other than FACE UP.

Chairman an eye clean G SI2 is a far better option than a j VS1 - but all labs grade most sI2''s at a level that most consumers would call less than eye clean.

Plleeeese nice kind helpful people - please dont become more expert than you can be by simply repeating myths and there by perpetuating them.

So, F-Si1 should be better still...

say, 1.41 F/Si1 (GIA) It gets listed for $8500 on the database here by a couple of sellers.

Other than top finish grades and size matching the deep IGI stone... no more details about cut. But there weren''t any about the initial choice that opened this thread either. And if color and clarity are apparent, so should be cut

the OP listed the color as GOOD in the first post. That is why I suggested a J. And, I would take a well cut J over an unknown random IGI G Si2 anyday. If I had to bet, and I am not a betting woman,

the G Si2 is NOT eyeclean.

To get a quality diamond in that pricerange in the size the OP wants (1.5 carats) something has to give. Is an IGI G equivalent to a GIA G? I thought it would be more like an H-I. So, if you are looking at a H/I color, deep, unknown cut Si2/I1 ---- why would anyone not opt for the first stone I posted from GOG? It''s cheaper too!!!
