Not sure what to do regarding an OEC purchase

Well, Kim, I was looking at a large OEC online which was local at a high dollar jewelry store in the exclusive part of a major city and when I asked the sales guy the particulars about the color of the non graded stone he stated that he wasn't qualified to answer that question....LOL! I should have asked him before I started...."How long have you been selling jewelry?" LOL! I wanted to see the stone in person so I went all the way down town to the store to look at the stone and it was deader than a door nail. I was surprised that such a high end jewelry store would have purchased an estate ring with such a dead large stone. I would suggest that you ask specific questions about the stone over the phone...

Is it dead in the center under the table?
Does it have any dead spots?
Does it have lots of fire? Sparkle?
Is the tone of the N color brownish or yellowish when viewed from the side?

If they are evasive about the answers, assuming that they have been in the business for a long time then you might want to save yourself a trip.

One local jeweler when I started asking questions said, "You just need to see it in person and you will know if it is the ring for you." She did say that they graded color according to GIA standards, but then it was another ungraded stone and an antique ring. But another local jeweler stated the stone was very nice and sparkly and the ring it was set in was phenomenal too.

At least your stone is GIA graded so that is a plus, someone thought it was a nice enough stone to have it graded by GIA. I wouldn't worry about it being too big. If it is nice then you should wear it and have fun.

When I went to certain places with my 2c that faced up like a 3 c. I would turn the diamond around on my finger so it could not be seen as a precaution. I say go for this stone and get a 14 day return policy in writing. Hope it is the one for you.

oh, sorry, I see you decided not to go for it. I wrote this earlier and just finally posted.

Kim, yesterday I told my husband that I needed to go buy a hole puncher just to get out of the house and be kid/fuss/noise free for just 30 minutes...
I will gladly volunteer to drive out there for you. Even if you are out of state...no problem. My husband will understand :wink2:

Seriously, am interested in what you will do. Great pics MDS...That rose cut marquis looks like a ring I have seen on PS. Was that a recent pic/in store? Beautiful!

HA! Did you really do that? I mean, you really said you needed to buy a hole puncher? LOL! I need to remember this for the next time I need to get out of the house. Knowing my husband he''d probably say "Well why don't we all go then?"....lol.

And oops! Sorry for the confusion--The rings in the tray are all mine, so I am sure that is why the rose cut marquise looks familiar. The ones on my finger belong to Tiffany. :naughty: And yes, the photo was taken just about 3 weeks ago. I got tired of looking for an OEC and thought I might talk myself into a MRB. ;)

 Yes I SURE did! I am a work at home Mom and the nearest family we have is 800 miles away. So time alone/breaks are usually the outcome of a paper/rock/scissors thing between Me and SO. So that day, the hole puncher was a necessity. Maybe I need some of Kenny's pills  I am actually in the middle of grading finals. The kiddos and I had a spray water bottle fight while I graded. Gotta do what 'cha gotta do!
And I didn't make the connection until now, but OH MY GOSH THAT MARQUIS!!! I drooled over that one quite a bit. Really really cool find.

Kim, I wouldn't apologize. Spending $500 is a big deal for us right now, let alone over $12k. We don't have to pay for it/wear it...you do. If I had found PS before my first OEC purchase, I probably would have had seven or more threads that were false starts. Still routing for ya!

After talking it over with my husband again, I've realized that I just wasn't comfortable with buying such a large diamond. I didn't feel good about the idea of spending over budget for a diamond that wasn't really what I was looking for. So in the end, I think I've subscribed to both, "A deal is only a deal if you are getting exactly what you want," and "When in doubt, don't." So I'm sorry to disappoint by not even going to go see it. It just wasn't the right diamond for me.

Exactly. I think you are making a good decision. I don't know why it is when I can't find what I want I start trying to talk myself into things that I don't want. Go figure. :? I think it's the hours I spend on the internet searching that makes my brain go wonky...lol.

There's a jewelry store near me that sells a ton of vintage rings and they have a 2.51 carat for sale. I've looked at it a few times, I remember it being very sparkly, but that's all I really remember about it. Honestly, I am unsure whether it's an OMC or an OEC. It's in a vintage, classic mounting with the center diamond and baguettes on either side. Center diamond: J-K Color; VS-1 Clarity Accent diamonds: G-H Color; VS Clarity. I'm not sure whether those are EGL or GIA stats. Price is $16,999 BUT it's been for sale for a very long time (their larger diamonds seem to sit for a while) and they might be willing to negotiate that price down close to your budget--I know I've negotiated many pieces with them. I can contact you thru DB if you are interested.
