Since my fiance is a boy, who completely freaked out upon seeing how much there is to learn about diamond shopping, I did most of the work and tried to explain it to him nicely.

We went shopping online and to some local b&m''s. I think we may have ahd some success yesterday.

But first, let me get out all that frustration about looking for a good emerald cut: AAAAARRRGGGGHHH. Man, is it tough to search for those.

So, even though nothing is final yet, I thought I''d indulge my excitement and anticipation in the place where I know it will be best received.

We''re looking at a .79 G VVS1 Emerald cut. I don''t have all the spcs in front of me, but memory says it had a 66% depth and a 68% table. No culet, no fluorescence. Length to width ratio of 1.4:1

I''m having it set with briliant trapezoid sidestones, .53 total cw. The ring would be 1.32cw total.

I''m so anxious I could die. Thanks for the outlet!

Well, mostlywatching, you're light years ahead of me ~ it's taken me three ill-informed attempts to finally start searching for a diamond the "right" way. I'm clueless about emerald cuts (in fact, still learning about round brilliant cuts), but good for you that you decided to put the research in BEFORE you sunk your money into who-knows-what!! The advice I'm trying to give myself is...don't be over anxious (so hard to actually LIVE by those words). Every time I go out to just "look" and gain experience, I get very wrapped up in seeing ANY diamond on my finger and this is where my frailties show up. At first, it's very easy to get caught up in the sales pitch - but you will find in due time that with some base knowledge you will be a much more discernnig consumer, and hopefully more at ease with waiting for the right diamond to come along. Good luck on your search!

Remember, just be patient! It has taken me a while to find my stone, but when it gets here tomorrow, I know that I am going to be absolutely happy with it. I almost bought into a couple of sales pitches along the way, but I always lived by the "let me sleep on it" philosophy. This saved me from buying a couple of stones that I would have absolutely regretted.

Also, coming from a guy, make your fiance do some work, too! I didn't know anything about diamonds, when I started about a month ago, but now I find myself knowing more than a lot of jewelers I encounter.

Nevertheless, good luck in your search!

Thanks!

We both came around here, and I credit this site with making sure I knew more than just about every jeweler we talked to.

Although I must say, it was very disheartening to see all their faces drop when they realized we were in the market for a specific, well cut stone, as opposed to something they could tell us was a nice stone.

Luckily, the one jeweler we decided to meet with again knew his specs and wasn't pushy.
