Hi,

I''ve been looking around for a pair of affordable big diamond studs. I tried online as well as jewelers. Today, at the advice of a friend, I decided to check out Macy''s diamond studs. They have a huge promotion right now. Anyways, they showed me a pair of 1.5cts total weight diamond studs for retail $4300. But after all the discounts, it became $1733. Only ne catch, the studs are not certified. They sparkled and do not have any black spots/clouds to the naked eyes. How do I go about checking if they are a good deal if they are not certified?

Thanks!!!

Welcome to Pricescope. You would have to get them appraised, can you return them if the appraisal doesn't check out?

Yes. They have a 6 month return policy.

i work at macy''s, fine jewelery is only 30 days and only if you keep the tags on, if you buy them get them appraised right away and keep those tags on!!!

So 1.5 for $1733?? Stores like Macy's inflate prices, love to give huge discounts. Making you think you got the deal of the century.

The diamond studs I have seen have been sub par, but go ahead and buy them. Just keep the tags on as was mentioned and make sure you can take them to a PS appraiser. Please don't take them to another jeweler, for a look see..... You'll pay about $100 bucks for the appraisal. Please report back to us, I am thinking, you'll want to return them. A deal is only a deal if you get exactly as you want, or if it looks too good to be true it usually is.

I agree w/Lisa, I would go to Richard Sherwood, Neil Beaty or Dave Atlas. I like PS vendors for diamonds and you know what you are getting.

They might be pretty, and earring quality stones are typically lower than ring quality stones.

But brace yourself that they are probably IJ/I2 or LM/I1 or MN/SI2-SI3 quality stones, which can be pretty but are lower quality.

You received a lot of great advice from the pros already.

I just wanted to say that of coarse if you love them then that''s all that matters. But the fact that you are here means you MIGHT be a little more concerned over the cut and quality than the average person off the street. I''d be interested to know how the 1.5''s from Macy''s "measure up" so to speak. Is there ANY detailed info on them? Measurements? I just wonder if a pair of very well cut stones in a slightly smaller carat weight wouldn''t face up as large as potentially poorly cut stones from Macy''s? I JUST got a pair of 1.22ctw AGS0 studs and didn''t pay too much more than you''re looking at paying........just something to consider.

Keep us posted, I''m very curious.

If you love them what does it matter? It sounds like a nice deal if you don''t see any inclusions...

Macy''s have their own grading system. i.e.....AAA,AA,A for clarity grades.
