not a diamond, but a ring question

We have started shopping for wedding bands. I really like the look of tungston (sp?) and like the fact that it is such a hard metal and wont'' scratch easily. However, the one i really like has a sterling silver inlay stripe. I figure this will scratch alot easier than the outter metal. Is this somthing to be concerned about? Can scratches be polished out without making it weaker in the center? The silver does not go through the entire ring, so if it gets polished too much, will it wear down to the tungston? any help appreciated.

How wide is the silver inlay ? If ittakes much ofthe ring''s width, than it would show scratches just like any other silver ring. For a 1-2mm wider strype, you would need a loupe to see scratches. What you say is right - frequent polishing wears down a ring, but this not a common hazard. It sounds hard to believe that one might want to have a ring polished every week for any reason. Rings with inlays can be repolished - plating and engraving do not allow it,inlay does. The question is how many times (perhaps the maker could answer this) and how relevant that number is to you.

I am affraid the only way to find out how exactly your ring will wear is to wear it - this is not just a matter of materials science, but of how you wear it and how you judge the inevitable signs on it.
