This is my first pricescope post, so just wanted to say thanks to everybody who contributes. It has certainly helped my search.

So today I just got a diamond from a vendor I found out about through this website. It is an EGL diamond, so I was expecting to drop the color and clarity at least 1 grade if not more. I took it to an appraiser for him to look at and a couple things sent up some red flags.

The first one is that he looked up the diamond on both EGL-USA and EGL International''s websites for an online verification and neither had the cert online. We actually didnt expect it to show up on EGL-USA''s site because the cert doesnt say EGL-USA, it just says EGL. I spoke w/ the vendor and he was surprised and thought maybe it wasn''t up yet because it was certified recently - July 19th, 2009. But he claims he has a hard copy of the cert and that they got it direct from EGL. I know there is an EGL-Israel, which has the worst reputation, so could this diamond be from EGL-Israel? How can I tell by looking at the cert? Even if it is EGL-Israel, if I am happy w/ what the appraiser told me and think I got a fair deal on the diamond should I really be concerned about not being able to verify the diamond online? The appraiser did tell me he felt as though the diamond on the cert was the same diamond I brought to him. The vendor also has a full value trade up policy.

The second problem, which isnt nearly as big a deal i suppose, has to do w/ an inscription. The comments section of the cert says the diamond is an excellent cut hearts & arrows. The appraiser said usually when it says this in the comments section they inscribe the diamond w/ the cert # unless the buyer asks them not to. I talked to the vendor and he said the inscriptions used to be popular, but aren''t really done so much any more so it wasnt odd that my diamond did not have any inscription on it.

I am trying to make a quick decision on whether this is the diamond for me. I appreciate any feedback. Let me know if I need to explain anything more clearly, or you need some other info.

Thanks.

Hi Masta

Do you have the report number please? Might be able to identify it that way from the format.

Thanks for replying. It is 2957108335.

I saw somewhere else in this forum somebody saying (maybe even you :) ) that if the first two numbers are from the year then it is EGL Israel. i.e. - 2009 would be 2xx9 or 29 as the first two digits of the cert #. But I looked up a cert # for a different diamond that followed that same theory and that one showed up on EGL International. So maybe you can clarify more for me. Thanks a lot!

From the info I have EGL Israel can have a 10 digit number as this one does, not sure on the year numerical theory....Maybe if Rich or Neil or one of the other experts sees this they can shed some light on that. What is the exact carat weight of the diamond please? I might be able to try and look it up.

Hi Mastaputa,

I would be less concerned with this one because if it is indeed a diamond that was certified at the end of July, then it would state on the report if it had a laser inscription by using the term "EGL inscription" or "Laser inscribed" or "Laser inscription registry", followed by the certification number. If it doesn''t state any of these terms on the cert, then the diamond was not likely laser inscribed while it was at the lab.

Also, what is the exact carat weight of the diamond? EGL International requires the report number and carat weight of the stone for their online verification, but if for some reason you still cannot verify it online, you should be able to email the Tel Aviv office at [email protected] or the Turkish office at [email protected]. Maybe one of those contact emails can help you.

Thanks Lorelei and Barbara. The carat weight is 1.21 which I entered in as well on the EGL International website.

So lets just say it is EGL Israel and I am happy w/ what the appraiser told me as the true specs of the diamond and I think I got a fair deal on the diamond. And also the vendor has a good trade up policy. Should I not be overly concerned then w/ it being an EGL Israel certed diamond? Thanks.

Hey MP,

If you had it independantly appraised and you love it, and you think your beloved will love it, and you''re comfortable that the inclusions, measurements, and stats match what is listed, then I think you''ll be just fine.

However, if not knowing still bugs you, then take it to the next level by emailing the labs or calling them to see if you can get someone to verify it for you. EGL has several different International labs and unfortunately their website is a bit outdated (in my opinion) so I wouldn''t be overly concerned that you couldn''t verify the number there, but I would be a little concerned if you find out you can''t verify it *anywhere*.

Great points by Barbara, and Lorelei.
If you are comfortable with the seller, I would not be concerned about EGL not having the report up on the site- they are simply not all that dependable with regards to such things- especially as here are so many EGLs
I''d say that if you are happy with it, and the price was "considerably" lower than a stone of the same grade issued by GIA, you should be fine.
The main aspects that I feel are important to a consumer about EGL reports is that
1) they pay a lot less than a stone graded by GIA
2) they are aware that if they ever decide to sell their diamond, the lesser report will come into play. If they paid a low enough price at the time of purchase that would compensate for the lower price if they decide to sell.

Ignore EGL and base your buying decision on the appraisal you paid for.
If the information your appraiser gives you adds up as being acceptable and you love the looks of the diamond then you are set.
What EGL says or which one is irrelevant at this point because you have a better opinion.

Thanks to all who replied. I have decided to keep this diamond. I am by no means a diamond expert, but for the money I am spending, I have liked this diamond more than the others I have looked at. It is going in a Tacori setting, so it will take a little time for me to have the ring back, but I''ll post some pictures once she says yes!

That sounds fine, best of luck with the proposal and please post some pics when you can!
