No GIA Report Inscription on the Girdle....

I wonder if someone would care to advise me, please.

I'm considering buying a particular used engagement ring for my wife as she lost the first one I bought her some years ago....

The diamond has the benefit of a GIA report which the seller, a jeweller, has made available to me. He tells me that the GIA report number is not inscribed on the girdle of the diamond. I understand that it is not unusual for GIA report numbers not to be so inscribed. I have looked up the details of the report on the GIA website and it checks out. (The report is about 4 and a half years old)

I note that the report states-

INSCRIPTION(S)

GIA 2116439434, H&A

Does this mean that the report is telling me that the stone IS inscribed? If "yes" then I am wondering as to the reason that the jeweller has told me that the stone isn't inscribed....

It means it was inscribed at one time, although I don't remember GIA ever inscribing Hearts and Arrows before. I would ask to look at the girdle under the microscope for verification. If your jeweller won't let you do this, I would look elsewhere for a diamond as this would be a red flag (as this entire situation is) against buying from this jeweller.

I was under the impression that GIA will make note of any inscriptions done previously (ie H&A inscribed by another lab) but are not verifying whether or not it's H&A since they don't do that. If it says that the GIA number is inscribed, it should be there upon inspection, plain and simple. If not, I second the advice to run.

Interesting question!

The report in question is a Diamond Dossier- which automatically includes laser inscription.
It is possible that the diamond as inscribed "H&A" prior to the GIA report- or it's also possible that the person who submitted the report asked GIA to add that. GIA will inscribe things on diamonds on request.

In ANY event, the diamond needs to be examined under a microscope so that you can verify that it indeed is inscribed.
I agree that a seller not knowing this stuff is a HUGE red flag.

Many thanks for everybody's helpful postings. I've just now had a further communication from the seller to say that after speaking with his diamond supplier he has re-examined the girdle and can confirm that the correct GIA Report number is there. He was able to view it via a 20x loop.

The stone scores 2.1 with the Holloway tool which seems most acceptable.

Hi OP, my diamond hca is also 2.1, the ASET does show a little bit of leakage which makes it a little contrasty. So, if you can, follow up with an ASET with the vendor or for sure with an appraiser during your return period. Remember, HCA is a rejection tool, not a selection tool. A value of 2.0 is good for further consideration. My experience of PS makes me think an HCA of 2.5 or thereabouts can be good performers too if you are getting good bang for your buck.

The stone's clarity is SI1 and the GIA report states-

Clarity Characteristics Crystal, Cloud, Feather



Is this anything about which I should be particularly concerned?
