Hey guys, the people at Niceice.com say that they don''t carry any round diamonds with a 58% Table. Does that mean that a 58% Table diamond is necessarily bad? I know it depends on other factors too, such as crown and pav. angles. I also think that AGS allow the Table to go up to 60% for their Ideal cuts. The reason this caught my eye is because I just bought a 1 ct round diamond with the following specs:

Table - 58%
Depth - 61.4%
Crown - 33.5 deg.
Pav. - 43.7%
Pol/Sym - VG/VG

Based on these info, I would guess that the stone is about an AGS1 grade, and I don''t think the 58% table throws it off by that much. What do you guys think????

what are the dimensions on your stone?

The traditional AGS ideal parameters (pre 2005) allowed tables between 53-57%. Anything larger was not allowed a 0 grade.

Recently AGS has updated to a performance-based rather than proportions-based system and tables including and above 60% may qualify for the ideal grade, depending on other particulars and how they perform in the new metric. This is fair because it allows for a greater range of taste while rewarding actual performance over 'blind' numbers. Dealers won't necessarily adjust what they consider 'elite' and proven merely as a result of new lab approaches.

Nice Ice has a very high standard for what they carry. Todd is quite discriminating and the goods he stocks fall within a narrow range that he considers the best. This is the same with many of the vendors on PS. We have similar tolerances we stay with for our top goods - with slight variations - based on experience and preference.

here are the dimensions for my stone:

6.59 X 6.64 X 4.06

I know that niceice.com carries only the best diamonds, so that''s why they''re so strict. I guess I would rather pay $5K for an AGS1 (this stone) than $12K for an AGS0 because I''m still a poor student. Would you guys classify this stone as an AGS1?

If this other stone looks good, sure that. There is no reason in those numbers to reject it (try the CutAdviser under 'Tools' on top of this page for a reason). Now, of course the numbers are not everything and what not, but at least this is a start. If the seller can provide picture or there is some return policy allowing for a reality check ... there isn't much more left to talk about. Aside the story of the 7k price gap ? That is quite a bit.
