Hi everyone! I''ve been lurking for awhile now and have found this website so informative!! I am hoping the experts here can help me with a question. I am setting my 1ct round brilliant into a new Tiffany style setting. The jeweler has a stock piece that is made for a 2ct, but they said they can modify it to fit my 1ct stone. Although this is a very common setting, it is the last setting that they have of this sort. It has the integrated head. Now they are only going to carry ones with a peg set head which I do not like at all. I cannot order from another vendor b/c it will void my diamond warranty if I don''t use a setting provided by them. So my question is...is it ok to use a setting intended for a 2ct round diamond for a 1ct round diamond? What implications does modifying the head have as far as appearance/security, etc or is this really no big deal? The jeweler said they always have to modify the head to fit each unique stone, but shouldn''t you start out with something closer to the right size? Thanks for any input!! I''ve become addicted to this site!! :-)

They would have to take out the 2 ct. head and put in a 1 ct. head, I would think. So I am not sure what they are meaning.

But here's the best advice. Don't even give a thought to a diamond warranty! Your ring needs to be insured as a rider on your homeowners insurance or separately on a jewelry policy. You need coverage for all risks, and the store warranty is unlikely to give you that, especially if they have conditions about having the stone checked every so often or you lose the warranty.

Go ahead and insure the ring as it is now if it is not already insured. Then shop elsewhere for the setting you want so you can have it ordered with the right size head and in your size. If the setting is similar, I wouldn't worry about making a change to the insurance. If the new setting is totally different, you might need to submit a new appraisal to have the correct description.

Oh, and welcome to PS!

Interesting question. I know that when the diamonds are set the prongs are moved a heck of a lot. I don''t think it would be too much of a problem using a 2ct setting for a 1ct stone as far as security of the stone is concerned. My worry would be how it looked at the end. If the setting is made for a larger stone, how will a smaller stone look? Will it be overwhelmed by the setting? It''s more of a general concern, as your ring choice of the Tiffany style is fairly sleek and thus likely to suite most stones, but something to consider I think.
