Hi all!!! NEWBIE here.

How often Does an f color, .5 - .6 carat,IF, generic asscher/square emerald come into the virtual diamond list? a few days ago there were several to choose from and today when I went to go look zilch. I guess it''s all the last minute valentine''s day shoppers. How rare are they?

I''ve been learning about how to buy the stone for a while from this site and others and after a trip to the Seybold building here in Miami i am sure that i feel better buying online.

I have read that good old gold is a great source for asschers and that they can bring in virtual stones. Has anyone used good old gold for bringing in vitual stones? did they tack on more costs above the price of the virtual stone? a few bucks is ok several hundred would be a different story. I do like the research and the extra info they provide on their site about the stones, but they seem very pricey.

I am planning on either tension setting the asscher in titanium I like either of the two tension designs in the picture. thinking of using boone for this. or a simple paladium setting I found in excel diamonds. which do you think will be a tougher setting? We do a lot of sailing and want a firmly mounted stone. should we consider prongs?

your knowledge on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

well i feel dumb.. It was right there the whole time... thank you for the link. anyone have the answers or opinions on my other questions...

Welll.... I don''t think that IF is all that rare on the general market. But you may have to wait a little while. Do you just like the idea of IF? VVS would still be 100% eye clean even with a loupe.

I actually don''t know if tension settings are partcularly strong/stable. Try a search and you will find threads on the topic though. Maybe kenny will see this, he has 2-3 tension style rings including one by Boone I believe.

By the way, have you seen the Octavia? If you like step cuts, I really think THAT is the way to go!! Do a search to see...

octavia is nice. the corners are a big to big for my taste Its too close to an octagon. The light performance is incredible though. and they are pricey especially since I do not think any small .5 carat octavia have been made.

I have seen a tension setting in titanium for men on the forum. I''m not sure if it was Kenny''s it had a wedding band with little blue diamonds too. It is what got me going down this road.although I need something way more feminine for my girl. I gave her a picture of it when i proposed and said i was working on the perfect ring. She knows i do my research and usually good things happen when i do.

As for the IF instead of vvs i liked the idea of a perfect stone, but I''m not so sure anymore. from what I''ve read the inclusions a vvs1 has can actually help identify it and unlike girdle markings that can be "erased" this will always be there. I don''t know i guess it''s a toss up. the difference in the price between if and vvs1 really isn''t that much of a factor on a stone this small.

I think I''ll wait a bit and if nothing shows up settle for the vvs1

Ps Nice doggies. I have a wire haired black and tan.

Pyrofly, we do have 3 tension settings and two are titanium from Boone Rings.

Sorry none of them have blue diamonds in them.
In a few days I hope to have pics of the Octavia set.

IF diamonds are always rare, as are well-cut asschers.
If you are searching for a good asscher you may want to be a little flexible on clarity and color.
Plus to get that wonderful asscher hall of mirrors effect get the largest asscher you can.
I went down to H VS2 for the Octavia and it is astonishingly beautiful.

If you have not already done so, go out and see lots of diamonds of various color and claritys.
You are paying a lot of money for an IF diamond (or you are giving up a lot of size).
After finding out what all the color and clartys look like if you still want an IF then so be it.

Let me know if you have any questions.
This is my titanium ring with a Good Old Gold asscher in it.

Kenny thanks for responding.

We want a white stone not blue... I just put the pic with the blue stone because we like the setting. Your ring is awesome originally that is what i was going to get her, but we actually bought a cheapy stainless imitation one with a round c.z. to get the look of it on her hand and she said it was to manly. so we are looking for something a little more lady like.

We saw lots of stones at the seybold building. Very few of the asschers were in the size I was looking for and then the ones that where in the size range were ridiculusly priced. 3-3.5k for a .5 carat stone. It seems most of the people I talked to obviously were more into ripping me off than selling a stone. It is important to us to get a colorless stone. I think G would be as far as we would like to go. As to the clarity I would like to keep it a very clean stone deinitely above vs1. The thing is based on the virtual diamonds i was looking at, it was only around 200-400$ difference between the if and a vs1. This same 200-400$ didnt seem to amount to much when going up in carat weight. The diamond still showed the same (the dimensions only went up by hundreads of a mm) it just didnt seem like it was a big enough jump to make the hall of mirrors thing come into play.

I do love the light return of your octavia, but we were looking looking for a more traditional cut stone.(more squre less octogon) Have any small octavias been cut? the smallest one good old gold has right now is .91 and way above budget. I was looking at stones in the $1800.00 range but i think i will be uping the budget a bit to around 2.5k.

It''s good to know that i can go to boone for my girls ring. I sent him an email and received no reply so i was a little worried about it.

Does my logic on the stone make sense?

Hi Xavier,
I must have not recieved the e-mail, as I always answer them. There should be plenty of options for an octagonal stone for a tension set. One main consideration is that the stone needs to be raised up enough to keep from poking the finger, so usually around 1mm or so clearance is needed below the stone. A little metal is needed above the stone as well. There are lots of ways to connect the stone holding part to the ring shank part, so you can get creative there. Other options include inlays of materials such as meteorite or other precious metals. Internally flawless is a lot more rare than a VVSI, so some savings can be gained there.

Well I found the stone... .54 carat G IF Blue Nile signature series. 4.53 x 4.54 x 3.on it's way to Bruce Boone today.

It will be similar to Kenny's new ring only completely polished and hopefully slightly more curvy (aka feminine)

will post the final product when we get it.
