Hi -

After making the decision that it''s time to "pop the question", I''ve gone to the local stores (Shane, etc) and read TONS of stuff on the internet (and these forums) and I think I''m suffering from information overload.

I''ve never purchased a diamond before and all I had to start with is that she doesn''t want "round or heart shaped" - which after some prodding means "Emerald, oval or princess - BUT if you find a round that is really really great, that''s ok too" (which I think translates to "I want to be different from my sister")

So I''ve decided that I can go crazy trying to get my head around all of the info I''ve read - or - I can turn to the collective wisdom here and ask for help.

If you guys could give me some general pointers as to what I''m looking for with these square and rectangular shapes (or even the oval), I''d really appreciate it. I can take that info, start my search and come back with more specific questions later.

Thanks in advance, there''s some really great info on this website and in these forums!!

Nathan

Welcome.

THere is so much info on here. Try typing in a search. You can search topics or pics. Then you can view other''s rings and see lots of info. Also, try looking in the FAQ from the home page. You can find a lot of stuff covered there, too.

BTW- I love a cushion cut. I didn''t want a round diamond like everyone else in my family. My original ring was a pear. I recently upgraded to a cushion. They come in squarish to longish shapes. The sides are a bit curved, but they still have really great sparkle. You also skipped pear and marquise and asscher shapes.

Has your GF inferred that she would like you to pick out the ring ALONE? If she has strong feelings about shapes, she may want to steer you in the right direction.

Good Luck!

A plus for ovals: they face up LARGE. They even look larger than rounds for their carat size

A minus for princess cuts: I''m in the ''they''re soon to look dated'' camp. Know when you see those very elongated marquise diamonds in yellow gold and think to yourself "she so got married in the 80''s"? Well, I think princess cuts are the next to go. Not that I have any evidence for this! And some of those 80''s rings look nice! But timeless is good for something she''ll be wearing for, heaven willing, 60 years!

So, might I suggest a lovely oval solitaire? Or (my fave) an oval with stubby pear sidestones?

been some princess bashing on PS lately... what's up?

An oval would be nice, and they do face up nice.

As for squares, the drawback to them is, for their ct. weight, they face up smaller. So you have to go bigger than normal to get a nice size stone. I don''t know what your budget is, but if it''s substantial, you might check out the Square H&A''s at GOG. Square shape with the scintillation of a round.

A square cushion is another nice option, and they are more budget friendly, as are ovals.

I don''t know if you''ve seen this thread, but it''s got tons of rings in it from posters here, may help you decide.

HI:

Any chance that you could take your GF on a shopping trip to get a perspective of what she likes that is suited to her hand? Many a girl has an "idea" of what she wants, then tries on that shape and changes her mind. Thing is, you can still surprise her with the final ring, but know ahead of time what really looked good on her finger in terms of shape and size (carat weight). BTW, don''t be shocked if she like the round brilliant shape the best...a well cut RB has that effect on folks.....
