Hello,

This is my first post, so if I posted this in the wrong forum, please forgive me. I know very little about diamond grading, but from what I''ve read it comes down to clarity, cut, carats, and color. How would you determine these factors with very small stones? I''ve attached a picture of a pendant I was looking at for my husband. The description states it to be: 1.15 total carat weight, and the listing price is $1900.00 USD. With this limited information, how much would you estimate the diamonds in this piece are actually worth?

Thanks in advance.

In small diamonds under 1/10 carat, generally, cut does not play as big of a role. In fact many people prefer "single cut" diamonds, which do not have the full compliment of facets in smaller stones. These stones do come in a range of clarity and color, which affects their valuie. These small stones are referred to as mele or calibrated diamonds. Israel diamonds sells calibrated diamonds, which might help give you a better idea of the worth of the individual stones.

James Allen has some interesting information about cut quality in melee diamonds:

"Smaller diamonds (often called melee) are cut in factories around the world and are available in a variety of qualities. The lowest quality goods are usually labeled as "commercial" and consist of I/J/K color and I1 clarity. "Promotional" goods are higher in both color and clarity, but are still cut for maximum weight. The highest quality diamonds are often referred to as "Collection".
Collection diamonds are finer in both color and clarity. They''re precisely cut to maximize fire and brilliance. Collection quality goods are only available from specialty dealers."

So you can call and ask what quality the stone are, but my guess is that they are commercial grade.
