I''m sorry none our experts has jumped in to answer your question. I am assuming it may be because most folks on here know more about gems than about the nuances of metalwork.
I''ve been working with a custom jeweler (really he''s a metalsmith/caster, not a jeweler) on my own personal design. What I have discovered from this is that the metalsmith acts as a bit of an engineer. He has a great wealth of knowledge about the properties of ring metals. He told me that my design would not be strong enough to withstand regular wear without making it a bit more robust than I''d wanted. Basically the metal could not be too thin in critical places or it would easily bend when knocked into things, etc.
Another custom jeweler once told me that the ring gets strength from being poured and cast together in one mold. I got the impression that they don''t really "weld" on pieces afterwards. Maybe that is true, maybe not - I simply don''t know enough, sorry.
I''d say that the only folks who would be qualified to really answer the question of whether your setting can be modified from its current form to add a halo would be custom jewelers themselves. I haven''t read any posts from anyone on here who says they work metal, but you might do a search for "casting" to see if anyone has discussed it on this forum previously. I wish I could be more helpful!
