Hi, folks! Thanks for running such a great forum to help folks like me who are, essentially, clueless

Here''s everything I know about an emerald cut diamond set in 14K white gold. The description of the stone that I''ve got:

4.5 mm long
3.5 mm wide
2.3 mm deep
35 pts., possibly 40
VVS clarity
G color

A pic of it is attached.

What do you think of this for about $500?

Thanks!

A G colour VVS with a GIA report is costing from $800 upwards of this size, so maybe this diamond is worth $500 to you...However we don't know if it has a reliable grading report - or even any grading report, and looking at the picture, the diamond doesn't appear to be the best cut. So basically the colour and clarity can be lower than is stated. I would pass and save up a bit more, then buy one with a reliable grading report from an online vendor, rather than pay $500 on an unknown quantity. The setting doesn't look the greatest either.

Thanks for your quick response, Lorelei!

My opinion jives with Lorelei''s:
1. No cert = no guarantess on the stated grading = could be worth less
2. No cut info
3. Doesn''t look like a good cut although ECs can be difficult to photograph

I''d pass on it too.

Cool, Chrono, thanks for your thoughts and your time!

Hi,
I am in the market for an emerald cut and I can tell you that you don''t have enough info. If thats the actual ring, I would pass. If it seems too good pricewise to be true, it probably is. The setting looks like an illusion setting?? I have never seen that on an emerald cut. I agree with the advice to stick with GIA.
